Angela & Andre – Wedding Highlights
July 30, 2010 | Filed Under D'nM Video Productions | Leave a Comment
Angela and Andre’s wedding day was a lot of fun for us. We got to film Andre and the boys put through a series of tests to be able to gain access to Angela’s house, including Andre trying to figure out how to change a diaper and how to drink from a baby-bottle! We had the pleasure of shooting alongside the awesome team at Saxon Cole Photography. And were able to share a Same-Day-Edit at their reception at the QVB Tea Rooms, which received a great response from the guests.
We are now pleased to present the wedding highlights. Please feel free to leave a comment below.

Exposed Down Under
July 24, 2010 | Filed Under D'nM Video Productions | Leave a Comment
I’m proud to have been involved in putting together and running ‘Exposed Down Under‘ – which was an educational event for wedding filmmakers. ‘Exposed’ ran last week between July 12 and 16.
We were lucky enough to secure the talents of 4 internationally-acclaimed wedding filmmakers who were all fantastic presenters: Jason Magbanua, Konrad Czystowski, Michael Y Wong and Alvin Paver (Mayad Studios). The workshop also featured some of our local talent including Abraham Joffe, Edgard Neves, Susanto Widjaja, Daniel Cartwright and yours truly (Dave Cowling – DnM Wedding Films).
Air Canada did their best to ruin our plans to have Mike and Konrad there – but they made it just in time, with Mike essentially walking off the plane and straight into the auditorium for his first presentation. He never skipped a beat and brought the house down with his presentation on ‘The Language of Film’.
Jason presented on Marketing, SDE’s and Shooting & Editing Techniques for DSLRs. Alvin presented on Directing techniques and conceptualisation. Konrad talked to us about ‘How to Unvendorise yourself’. Abraham & Edgard put a local spin on their ‘Business Evolution’ and Santo and Dan teamed up to talk about Concept Videos and Trash-the-dress videos.
Attendees and presenters came from all over Australia as well as a few from Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines & Canada. We were so impressed by the number of people willing to invest in their own education and in raising the bar within our industry.
On the opening night of the event, I spoke about ‘Collaboration, not Competition’ – and how that mantra has seen a group of us in Sydney being able to collectively raise the quality of our work, along with the profile of wedding filmmaking in Australia. By the end of the event, it was great to hear the ‘mantra’ coming back to us from the attendees who approached the event very openly. Many friendships have been forged between people from all over the country (and internationally). I’m really looking forward to seeing the results of interstate collaboration over the next few months.
Peter Szilveszter from Living Lens wrote the blog entries for each day, as well as putting together a little video summary on day 4:

I am proud to have been part of an event that I believe will become a ‘red-letter day/week’ in the development of Australian wedding filmmaking. There were many hands involved in putting this together, but thanks must go especially to Rochelle Morris of Sauvignon Media Creations in Melbourne.
We are looking forward to creating an event that is bigger and better next year !! Stay tuned to http://www.exposeddownunder.com.au for the announcements for 2011.
50 attendees / presenters from all over the world:
Australia, Canada, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore.
Dave Cowling, Michael Wong, Santo Widjaja, Konrad Czystowski, Alvin Paver, Abraham Joffe, Mark Gibson

Love at first sight?
July 22, 2010 | Filed Under D'nM Video Productions | Leave a Comment
So, maybe it wasn’t love at first sight with Andrew wearing a mask and Sarah in her best ‘daggies’, but nonetheless it was a first meeting that made an impression on both of them.
We were excited to head up to the Hunter Valley to film Sarah & Andrew’s wedding day. The ceremony was held at the Hunter Valley Gardens Chapel and the reception was held at Casuarina Estate.
Photography was by James Bennett. Additional photography by Ross Coffey who took photos for Sarah & Andrew’s wedding feature in Woman’s Day New Zealand.

Esse Quam Videri

As Marc explains; Esse quam videri has a Latin meaning of ‘To Be, rather than to seem to be’. Although Marc uses the phrase to describe his bride as the real-deal, I think all would agree that equally; Together, Rachel and Marc are the real-deal.

Dao and Tim wrote beautiful, personalised vows that they shared in their ceremony at Doltone House, Pyrmont – but in their speeches they were a little less romantic; with both of them saying that today meant that there were now ‘no refunds’ and Tim adding that it was time to put pizza back on the menu, cancel the gym membership and that the toilet seat now stays up

The Ring Finger
June 23, 2010 | Filed Under D'nM Video Productions | Leave a Comment
Try this … join your hands together with your finger tips touching each other. Collapse your middle fingers so that they touch at your 2nd knuckle. Now try to separate your ring fingers. You can’t do it !! Lauren & Harley’s priest uses this as an analogy for the relationship between husband and wife. Whilst family, friends and siblings can be separated and come back to you – the relationship between husband and wife cannot (should not!) be broken
On April 10th, Lauren put on the beautiful wedding gown designed by Lauren’s nanna Faye Budd – ready to be wed to her man, Harley. The wedding ceremony was held at St Matthews at Windsor with the reception following at Yarramundi House, Richmond.

Wedding Video Music
June 14, 2010 | Filed Under D'nM Video Productions | Leave a Comment
We are often asked about music for our videos … Who chooses it? Can we choose it? How many songs?
We love having input from couples about their music choices and encourage you to have some input. We have discovered some fantastic music through the selections made by some of our couples. We are also occasionally given ‘standard wedding music’ to use … which makes the editing less than inspiring.
So here are some tips on selecting music for your wedding video – and some of our favourites from the past 12 months.
*Choose music that reflects who you are as a couple.
* Please avoid cliches. We have an unwritten rule that we will not put Shania Twain’s ‘From this Moment’ in our highlight videos !! Celine Dion is close behind
* Don’t necessarily look for music that you already have an attachment to. Our best videos come together where we are given freedom to choose the music based on the couples music preferences. This way, we often find music that appeals to the couple that they have no previous attachment to … this then creates a NEW attachment to your wedding film and help you to treasure it all the more.
* Our preference is that you send us a list of artists and songs that you like and dislike to give us a feel for the style that best represents you – and then allow us to choose from there. Music and audio are as much a part of the video as the visuals. Trust us to put together the visuals and the audio
* We would typically use up to 10 songs within the full video. If you wish to choose all of the music, please choose 10 to 12 songs with a variety of tempos.
Some of our recent favourites:
| Title | Artist |
| Better Today | Coffey Anderson |
| Bubbly | Colby Caillat |
| Desert Rose | Sting |
| Everything | Michael Buble |
| Feelin’ Good | Michael Buble |
| Fire Flies | Owl City |
| Halo | Beyonce |
| Harmony to my Heartbeat | Sally Saltman |
| Heartbeats | Jose Gonzales |
| Hey There Delilah | Plain White Tees |
| I Gotta Feeling | Black Eyed Peas |
| I Loved Her First | Heartland |
| If This Is It | Newton Faulkner |
| I’ll Never Let You Go | Evermore |
| I’m Yours | Jason Mraz |
| Infinity | Guru Josh Project |
| Light Surrounding You | Evermore |
| Love Lost | The Temper Trap |
| Love Story | Taylor Swift |
| Lucky | Jason Mraz |
| Memories | David Guetta |
| Real Love | Regina Spektor |
| Show Me What I’m Looking For | Carolina Liar |
| Smile | Uncle Kracker |
| Sweet Disposition | The Temper Trap |
| Take Me As I Am | FM Static |
| That Home | Cinematic Orchestra |
| The Hymn | Brooke Fraser |
| Time Of My Life | David Cook |
| To Build A Home | Cinematic Orchestra |
| Use Somebody | Kings of Leon |
| Viva La Vida | Coldplay |
| Wait Til You See My Smile | Alicia Keys |
| Walking on a Dream | Empire of the Sun |
| When I Say I Do | Matthew West |
| When Love Takes Over | Kelly Rowland feat David Guetta |
| When You Are Near | Carolina Liar |
| Who’d Have Known | Lily Allen |
We encourage the legal use of musical soundtracks. We are APRA licensed to use the music that you choose on your DVDs. We encourage you to buy the original songs and supply them to us.
| Selecting music for your wedding video can be difficult… |
| Audio, including the music soundtrack is as much a part of the video as the visuals … |
| Tips – avoid cliches. Sorry … No Shania Twain or Celine Dion. |
| Don’t necessarily choose something that you already have an attachment to. |
Don’t Wait !!

Today I’d like to share a little advice for the newly-engaged … please disregard any magazine or online article that tells you that 3 to 6 months from your wedding day is an appropriate timeframe for booking your videographer or photographer. I have seen it printed many times and as a result of this misinformation, we have had countless disappointed brides who call about our services much too late.
Last week we had to deliver the news that we were fully-booked to 4 different brides who had their hearts set on booking us to film their weddings. Usually, I’m very happy to give them the names of other wedding filmmakers whose work we also love – but I knew in all 4 cases that they were inquiring about some of the busiest days of the year and that their chances of finding a good wedding filmmaker at this stage were quite slim. I felt so sorry for one bride in particular who was in tears.
My friend Gavin of Gavin Cato Photography also turns away 3 to 5 brides every week who are simply inquiring too late.
Sometimes we do have short-term availability – but generally a good guide is between 10 to 14 months out from the wedding date.
Don’t wait !! First set your date, then your ceremony venue, reception venue, wedding filmmaker and photographer should be of equal priority if you want to secure the people you want ![]()

What an amazing wedding!
Lauren and Daniel were married on the grounds of the historic Sydney Mint on March 21st, 2010. The reception was beautifully decorated by Benita and her team at BNT Management, complimenting the perfect backdrop over the Sydney Opera House and harbour.
This highlight video has been edited exclusively using HDSLR footage. In the right hands, the cinematic quality of the images from these cameras is amazing!
It was great working once again with one of Sydney’s most easy-going photographers - Jeremy Byrnes Photography.

I must not forget the two most important suppliers at the wedding, Daniel’s own Kitchen Event Catering and Liquid Group (catering).
In the Garden of Eden

Haleh & Angelo were married in the Garden of Eden … well, otherwise known as ‘Eden Gardens‘ at North Ryde
Although it rained throughout the photo shoot, I think it lent itself to some beautiful, romantic footage taken around the city streets. Thankfully, the rain held off for the ceremony.
This highlight features footage mostly filmed on our HDSLR cameras (which is why it looks so awesome!).

The Ubershops!
May 10, 2010 | Filed Under D'nM Video Productions | Leave a Comment
On Saturday we spent the day learning about photography with Chris from Uber Photography.
So, what were a videography team doing learning photography? Well, we’re not about to add photography to our services in the near future, but the cameras that we’re now shooting many of our videos on are the same cameras as the photographers are using. Attending Chris’ Ubershops is about helping us to master these cameras, which will help us to create better videos … and also to help us take better happy-snaps of our families
D’nM Wedding Films are one of only a few Sydney studios who regularly invest in our own education and improvement. I’m astounded by the number of videographers in Sydney who don’t attend workshops, don’t participate in forums, are not up with current trends and don’t have any real interest in improving their product. Oh well, they will always be playing catch-up to those of us who do !! We’re also proud to be involved in helping other studios across Australia to succeed and grow their businesses: http://www.exposeddownunder.com.au).
I should mention that Kristy, (one of our awesome editors) also owns Imago Photography and does shoot weddings and portrait photography. If you’re connected with us on facebook, you may have seen some of Kristy’s work on a recent photo shoot with my kids.
Here are a few pix from the workshop …

Some of the most recognised video producers and talented local artists will be joining together this July in Sydney to be part of an Australian first for video producers.
This is a unique opportunity for videographers or people who are getting into wedding filmmaking. This will be valuable for beginners, right through to the most experienced amongst the wedding filmmaking community.
I am thrilled to be part of organising this event and I see it as a great opportunity to futher the quality of wedding films in Australia. I am quoted on the Exposed website, saying:
“Over the past few years I have seen an exciting change happening in the video industry in Australia, with a swing from competition to collaboration and the results have been great for the whole industry. I believe that ‘A rising tide raises all ships’ and I’m looking forward to seeing where we can collectively take wedding films in Australia.” Dave Cowling.
Event Details: Exposed Down Under
When: July 12th to 16th
Where: Sydney, Australia (the main venue will be the University of Technology – Sydney – right near Central Station).

Those were the words of wisdom offered by Rachelle’s father in his speech ! You’ll need to watch the whole video to understand why
Rachelle and Tahu were married in a place that held special memories for Rachelle, it was also the place where her parents had been married. It was a day filled with emotion and the love that is shared between the whole family (and newly created family of Rachelle, Tahu and Paora) is very evident.
