Jessica + Kenneth // The Highlights

(If you are having issues playing the video above, please turn HD off in the player.)

It is the little moments that make each couple and each story so unique. When Jessica’s father contacted me from North Carolina and told me of Jessica & Kenneth’s plans to have their wedding in nearby New Market, Virginia, I was extremely excited by the opportunity to film there, but meeting the couple was even more amazing.

I am always a bit nervous about meeting a couple for the first time, but these two were a dream to work with. From riding across the property on the back of a golf cart to the hilarious interview, we had so much fun capturing their special day.

I hope you enjoy their highlights!

Reina and Amar: Simple and Honest

May 30, 2010 | Filed Under Jason Magbanua | Wedding Videographer | Leave a Comment

I choose these words to describe their video, no frills, no excess, just a simple and truthful presentation of the wedding day.

It was evident that since the morning we arrived at the hotel that there was no other better, more meaningful way to tell the story.

Watch for yourself..

Reina and Amar: SDE from Jason Magbanua on Vimeo.

PS.  Indians and Scots party harder like no other.  We couldn’t help but partake of the free flowing alcoholic beverages while swaying to Indian dance music.  Usher and T-Pain got nothing on DJ Anuraga.

Oh, Amar also shared with us his custom bottled bubbly during the dancing - Armand de Brignac, the finest champagne in the world - I’m partying with Jay-Z next time.

Jessica & Dan | forever and ever

May 30, 2010 | Filed Under Studio 67 | 1 Comment

Jessica and Dan were engaged in Cabo last spring and spent a year planning their incredible wedding day!  When you add a mariachi band, Colombian dancers, a vintage car, a 20 person wedding party and a beautiful vineyard all together it becomes a pretty solid foundation for an amazing wedding day!  Of course the gorgeous weather was a nice touch too!  The outfits Jess had made for their dogs to wear were adorable and Percy, the Pirate Pug, was so excited during all the morning preparations.  Dan and I exchanged many messages and emails over the past few weeks during the final preparations.  He kept telling me that he wanted their wedding day to be everything Jess envisioned - "so long as she's happy that's all I need".  This song is so fitting - in Dan's eyes no one will ever hold a candle to his Jessica - she shines [almost] like the sun - it's a good thing he's got new sunglasses to wear around his new wife!  We wish you two a lifetime of love.... forever and ever!
Special thanks to Peter Rainford for coming out to shoot with us today!

Here's their SDE and a few photos from their big day!
Their amazing vendors included:
Decor: Simply Beautiful Decor
Floral Design:  The Watering Can
Sound + Entertainment: Good Vibrations

Quarta-feira começa a nova vida.

our last evo of the year + nov 15th-18th

May 28, 2010 | Filed Under StillMotion | Leave a Comment

we just locked down the dates for our last evo of the year and i wanted to share it with everybody here. the workshop will be in mississauga over three and half days, and will focus on finding you unique voice as a cinematographer. one of the biggest things we will deconstruct is the idea of effective communication (aka storytelling). understanding all of the tools already available to you can be a tremendous help in developing your style, impacting your audience in the right way (whatever that is for you), and getting more satisfaction and connection out of the films you produce.

in october we will be traveling the world from paris to australia to hong kong and we are so excited to be able to feature weddings from our trip during this evo.

for a detailed description and to apply for the workshop, check out our experience site.

The famous Loretto Chapel and Luminaria restaurant at the Inn and Spa at Loretto were the spectacular settings for Martina and Marc-David’s wedding in Santa Fe.
Martina looked amazing in a dress designed by Santa Fe’s very own Laura Sheppherd, and it was very nice to be able to work with Cynthea Kinnaman of Art and Soul Weddings and Events.

Q&A | 05. {storyboarding}

May 27, 2010 | Filed Under MIND|Castle Studios | Leave a Comment

Storyboarding is one of the most important things you can do to get the visual elements of your imagination onto something concrete to share with others. They help everyone who is shooting stay on the same page with how shots and movements tie together visually. I did a post about storyboarding awhile back on the INFOCUS blog, but I never had a chance to post it here. I edited it up a bit and added some new photos to it as well. Also, I thought I would post some downloadable storyboard templates below so you can use them in sketching out your own storyboards. I had a hard time finding just the right layout online, so I designed some storyboard templates in photoshop and they have been a huge help. You can print up a bunch, hole punch them and storing them in a binder so the next time you want to jot down an idea you have the empty frame templates there to use.

Template 01/. 16x9 widescreen aspect ratio: DOWNLOAD

Template 02/. 2.35:1 cinescope aspect ration format: DOWNLOAD

Storyboarding is an incredibly useful tool within all genres of filmmaking. From documentary work to event filmmaking. Storyboards provide a visual reference for the action that propels the movement of the story. Unlike writing out a shot list or just having a general set of ideas of what shots and framing you want, sketching out your shots on paper helps illuminate how how each frame is juxtaposed with the next. And it also helps you get a basic idea how a sequence ebbs and flows.

Sometimes I storyboard to just quickly transfer an idea to paper, where I am the only one who can understand it and then at other times I storyboard more carefully so that others are able to follow the storyboards as well.

Other times I have an intricate and lengthly sequence in mind and I want to see how each frame will edit with the next....Below is a much more intricate sequence with ideas for camera movements included and some possible effects.

With storyboarding, there can be infinite levels of complexity (or simplicity) within each sequence,  so to streamline the process I like to think of storyboarding as keyframing

Applications like Final Cut Pro, Motion, After Effects, Maya, (the list can go on) all utilize keyframing – the setting of a point at the beginning and the ending of an action and allowing the computer to interpolate the action that will occur between those two points. A helpful way to viusalize what you are going to storybarod is to think of the keyframes – the crucial moments of a scene or sequence. Then, when I actually film the sequence, the actions of the people will fill in the moments between those keyframes.

Whether you are good at drawing or not, the most important thing (a wedding, a corporate promo or an event) is to go into the shoot with a plan. This is important so that you shoot with intent.

Abe y Sergio

shalimar + dan // the master’s degree SDE

May 27, 2010 | Filed Under StillMotion | Leave a Comment

it’s very interesting for us to see two cultures come together on a wedding day.

shalimar and dan’s wedding was just that. shalimar, and the rest of her family, welcomed dan and his family in to the hindu culture with open arms, and many of the toasts that night by dan’s side spoke of such openness and the feeling of being totally welcomed.

this mixing of their two cultures and the events that occurred on their wedding day became the story of their SDE.

while many of our recent films are heavily narrated to propel the story forward, shalimar and dan expressed an interest in wanting their film to be propelled forward by the visuals shown and the background music.

Diana and Chris Wedding Highlights ~ Dance and dance

May 27, 2010 | Filed Under T2 Production | Leave a Comment

To me, one of the challenges in filming a wedding is to break out of the routine and bring in some creativeness that is unique to each wedding. This unique factor was found early in the day. After filming the groom’s side getting ready, Joanna told me that the groomsmen were doing some MJ’s move. At that point, I knew I have found the theme for this wedding – Dance. Their reception has proven me wrong (well… partially wrong)… Not only the young wedding parties love to dance, all their families, friends and relatives also love to dance. The dance floor in Petroleum Club was quite big, and it was PACKED with people.

Weddings at The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel

May 26, 2010 | Filed Under Meg Simone | Leave a Comment

What a treat to spend Tuesday at The Balsams working for Thom Pollard of Eyes Open Productions. I can’t dilvulge the secret project he was filming but I can say that during the break we had a few hours, so I took up office space on the verandah! I wouldn’t mind doing this a few times a week – WOW! I got more done in those two hours with a quiet breeze and breathtaking scenery as inspiration. Another super cool thing that happened is that I finally met Karen Ahrens who has been the onsite wedding coordinator at The Balsams for the last four years (and at the resort for 10!) She just completed an intensive training course through the Association of Certified Professional Wedding Consultants (ACPWC) and you can meet Karen and learn about their wedding offerings online, in this great film shot onsite at the resort.

“This accomplishment brings a new level of service to an already outstanding wedding experience at The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel!” – The Balsams Blog

I can’t wait to return to the Balsams for an elopement or wedding … or of course to just work on their verandah or in their summer gardens!

Photos: On our way up and back, in the same spot… a moose. My temporary office (sigh)
