There is so much I have to write about. 2009 has been the best year for us. We've worked with the most creative wedding professionals and the most wonderful, fun and loving couples. As I organize for The Big Move between January and February (West Edge here we come!) it's my plan to blog and post clips from the weddings I haven't yet gotten to. Like the gorgeous Greek wedding of Viki and Niko December 27 at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Boston with the reception at the ever-stunning State Room atop the city.

The night was clear and the view was dazzling. The bride wore pink-champagne tulle with silver sequined bandeau across the strapless top. The flower girls and junior bridesmaid wore antique ivory tulle ballet dresses with red satin straps and underskirts. The stateroom was awash in red uplighting, balls of deep red roses and carnations centered the tables and Greek music kept all the guests dancing passionately as they rained dollar bills (symbols of good luck and prosperity)down on the couple. I watched the circle dancing from the balcony at the State Room and at times all I could see was one graceful, moving figure made of all the guests' bodies. It was mesmerizing.

I wanted to create a cinemacard to thank our couples and our studio interns and staff and our wedding industry colleagues for helping make this year so memorable.
Jack and I worked on this one which made us feel all warm and happy inside. We're so grateful to be doing what we do. Thank you!

Michigan Wedding Spotlight – Kendall + Austin’s Highlight Video

December 31, 2009 | Filed Under Epic Motion | Leave a Comment

Kendall and Austin’s wedding took place in Troy, Michigan at Kensington Community Church and they partied it up in the Hills of Rochester at the Brookwood Golf Club. One of our favorite photographers - Aruna B – captured SO many stinkin’ cute pictures of these two…

Kendall and Austin – this is one of the most beautiful wedding films we’ve ever created. Thank you so much for sharing your lives with us. Your amazing personalities shine through this piece and we’ve had countless people tell us how much they love you guys and your story. You’re both top-notch people. Your influence reaches farther than you know.

Andrea and I love your love for each other and for God.
It.Is.Inspiring.

Enjoy the flick. It’s a good one.

Lauren [+] Jay

Jay & Lauren from Northernlight Filmworks on Vimeo.

This was a wedding we filmed for Lauren and Jay. The wedding was held at Northwood Christian Church in Indianapolis, IN. The reception was at one of our favorite venues, the Grand Ballroom at Union Station. We worked again with Janie of Alanna Photography and always enjoy working throughout the day with her. We enjoyed observing and documenting the day for Lauren and Jay. Jay’s father was caught a little off guard during his speech as his sons life flashed before him. We love candid authentic moments like that. We weaved the speeches throughout this film to add some texture and depth. The reception ballroom was beautifully decorated and the party was kept alive by DJ Brian Whitis. Always a pleasure to work with him.

2009 in the rearview

December 31, 2009 | Filed Under Studio+Z Films | Leave a Comment

As 2009 comes to an end I wanted to look back and reflect on all the the personal and professional events that helped make it one of the best years of my life.

First the personal events.

Without question the single best event of 2009 for me was the birth of our second daughter, Sadie. She came into this world on June 3rd and has not stopped finding new and inventive ways of melting my heart. She’s smiling and rolling over and it won’t be long until she’s crawling. Of course she has seen the camera more than once and I’m working on putting together a film of her first year like I did with Mya. Nice segue to Mya here, she turned two years old in May and is going full steam ahead, no really, she doesn’t walk anywhere, she runs for no apparent reason but to get from point a to point b, really really quickly. We took her to Disney last January and to say she had the time of her life would be a ridiculous understatement. I bet we rode the flying Dumbo ride at least a dozen times and looking back at the smile on her face as if every time was the first time, I could’ve ridden it another dozen times. Those times were priceless! Every day she continues to make Reagan and I laugh at something silly she says or does but we’re also in complete awe of her desire to share and help out with her little sister. These are in fact the best days of my life and I’m certainly enjoying every minute of them. I’m looking forward to the days when Sadie and Mya are able to play together more and we’re able to do more things as a family. Certainly Mya and Sadie have the best mom in the world and I have the best wife. Reagan and I celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary in September and she amazes me every day with her multi tasking abilities. No joke, she can hold both girls and still find a free hand to do something else. She’s been there when the girls are sick and she’s been there when I needed her too. I truly am the luckiest man in the world.

Now the professional.

2009 has been a head spinning year. So many great things have happened and I’m truly blessed for everything. It was a year of new beginnings as I changed the studio name. I went from Glass Eye Video to Studio+Z Films. This change was something I had been working on for a long long time. It took me forever to find a name I loved and once I did, I found a great designer in Renee, owner of Ribbons of Red, to help me bring it all to life. It was important to me to not just add ‘Films’ to Glass Eye, I wanted a whole name change as I felt the studio had gone through more of a rebirth than a name change. Renee helped create not just a logo and awesome site, but also a brand. That was something I never had and I couldn’t be happier with it.

I hired the super talented Josh Emerson this year. He is an amazing asset to our Studio+Z Films team and we couldn’t have accomplished what we did this year without him! We really fine tuned our Same Day Edit that help make so many weddings unique this year.

I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to educate others when I presented at WEVA, Wedding & Event Videographers Association International, the worlds largest wedding videographer organization and at MIVA, Michigan’s professional Videographers Association and I have a few more speaking engagements lined up for 2010. I really enjoy public speaking and to have the opportunity to help other studios grow and achieve their goals is so rewarding.

Also at WEVA, I was incredibly honored to be awarded a Creative Excellence Award, its the Oscar or Golden Globe of our industry and to bring the first International Award for wedding filmmaking to our hometown of Cincinnati is indescribable.

One of the best moments of 2009 came when I opened the mailbox and found my copy of EventDV Magazine where there was a four page spread about my studio and the concept film I created that helped make this year the best year for me professionally. Our studio was also featured on Style Me Pretty, Rock n Roll Bride and two issues of Cincinnati Wedding Magazine.

Lastly, I just found out I was voted Best Videographer in Cincinnati by the The Knot magazine 2009/2010. What a huge honor!

Yes 2009 may be over, but 2010 is right around the corner with so many new opportunities and I’m incredibly fortunate for them all. I have a few things I’ll be unveiling soon, but I’m most looking forward to filming some of the most incredible weddings I’ve filmed so far, including quite a few destination weddings. I’m truly a blessed man and I couldn’t ask for more.

Amy + Chris, A Short Film

December 31, 2009 | Filed Under Joe Simon Productions | Leave a Comment

Amy and Chris's fabulous wedding was this past weekend.

Their ceremony was held at St. Louis Catholic Church followed by a reception at Bar Mansion. These were both new places for us to shoot, so it was a pleasure finding new and cool shots.

You never know with a winter wedding in Austin, but this day was perfect! Amy and Chris were so fun to work with and all the guests has a great time. Everyone danced for hours and then joined the couple for the sparkler exit. As the family and guests waved, Amy and Chris departed in a vintage blue Cadillac.

Thanks for having us out to film your amazing wedding!

It’s New Year’s Eve

December 31, 2009 | Filed Under Paper Cranes Productions | Leave a Comment

Hi All,

Last night I couldn’t sleep so I thought why not try to do a quick nice and short clip with new year’s anthem song Auld Lang Syne. I ended up editing until 5am…

The idea is to appreciate all of our supporters and clients in 2009. However, looking at all of those clips has got me very touched. It made me very grateful of what God has given me and Dewi in our personal life and also in “Paper Cranes” life so far. We have been blessed with beautiful and encouraging people, better yet, we got married in a very very beautiful ceremony. Basically, we are living a life surrounded by happy people and we get to tell their stories. I felt very lucky.

So, thank you to everyone for your support.. especially our facebook fans.. for your comments and “like” and “share” LOL You guys ROCK!!!!!

Keep in touch and all the very best for all of you in 2010 and beyond!

2009 | Change

December 30, 2009 | Filed Under Shadowplay Photography & Video | Leave a Comment

2009 has been a year of change.

Katie and I started 2009 as PC’s and ended it as Macs.

I started 2009 as a videographer and ended it as a photographer.

It is this change that sets our path as we move into 2010. Shadowplay as we know it will most likely undergo more than just a facelift in the new year. And despite our lack of blogging, there’s been plenty of activity going on. There’s so much that we can’t wait to share and unveil in 2010, but only once everything is perfect.

Don’t freak out too much (especially our brides) … we’ll still be taking photographs in 2010 :)

Anyway, as I did last year, I’d like to list of a few of our highlights plus some favourite blogs and other things from 2009.

Highlights of 2009
January – driving to Newcastle to visit Kelly Munce and Renee Bell – and James Day on the way home
February – Flying to New Zealand to film a music video for Lydia Cole, visiting Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios and skydiving and bungy jumping at Lake Taupo.
March – Matt is voted into the EventDV ‘Top 25 Hottest and Most Influential Videographers in the World’
April – Matt spends a month in America (not so much of a highlight for Katie)
May – Matt comes home from America, much to Katie’s rejoicing
June/July – lots of work including awesome weddings with awesome couples
August – Matt’s parents celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary
September – We moved house!
October – lots of work
November – Flew to Sydney for a wonderful engagement shoot – and an early celebration for our 4th wedding anniversary
December – Married for 4 years! And a lovely Christmas with family.

Tami + Marc’s Wedding Trailer

December 30, 2009 | Filed Under Joe Simon Productions | Leave a Comment

Happy New year! We are just days away from the new year and I wanted to share one last trailer for 2009.

We filmed Tami & Marc's beautiful wedding at Orella Ranch in Santa Barbara California. This place was unreal! It's on top of a hill that gives you a view of both the mountains and the ocean. The weather this day started out a bit foggy but then cleared up to perfection with an amazing sunset.

Tami & Marc were awesome to work with, we had such a great time doing fun couple shots! The ceremony was held under a giant oak tree followed by the reception on the edge of a hill overlooking the valley and ocean. The decor, food and atmosphere were perfect, Tami spent countless months planning and it all showed!

Here is their wedding trailer, we will have their Highlights film up next month.

In Honor of Craig J. Dickson (April 2, 1949 - December 29, 2009)

December 30, 2009 | Filed Under Sweet Spirit Productions | Leave a Comment

Yesterday, December 29, 2009 I woke up to a world without a dear friend. It saddens me to write this on the Sweet Spirit Productions blog, but in total Honor and Respect I know Craig is smiling down on me as I am trying to figure out which words to place in order to convey my feeling about his passing on. So all I have to say now about Craig is His Train is Bound for Glory and He's On the Road Again, just in a different heavenly setting.

Thanks Craig for your stories of Chasing the Texas Sunsets. And may you forever be Chasing the Heavenly Sunsets now. Which most likely are not that much different that the Texas Sunsets, because we know that God Blessed Texas with many things and the beautiful Texas Sunsets is definitely one of God's Blessings. I will surely miss Craig's laugh and sense of humor, and it will be hard not to think and remember Craig on each glance of a Texas Sunset from here on out. - Sandy Buller

Craig Dickson’s Celebration of Life service will be Saturday, January 2, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church, Katy, Texas, at 10:30 a.m. The church address is 5601 Fifth Street, Katy, and the church telephone number is (281)391-2121.

FROM THE TRUETOTEXAS.COM WEBSITE:

Craig J. Dickson was born in Texas on April 2, 1949 and has been“Chasing the Texas sunsets” ever since.Craig attended “All Saints” Elementary School, graduated from Katy High School in l968, and attended Texas A&M University. Craig passed away on December 29, 2009 following a battle with cancer.

Preceded in death by his father R.W. Dickson and his mother Katherine Dickson Tyra.

He is survived by “high school girlfriend” his wife of over 38 years Cassie Dixon Dickson, his daughter Rachel D. Kellner and her husband Charles Kellner, and his grandson “The King” Dixon Charles Kellner. He is also survived by his sisters Joan Dickson and Diane Dickson; his two nieces and nephew, Shannon Beckman, Dora Ann Gostecnik and Dustin Fisher; R.V. and Thyra Dixon, Carol and Gary Gostecnik; and all of his cousins.

Craig made a living marketing real property and was a lifelong member of the Houston Association of Realtors. But, his career was “Chasing the Texas sunsets” criss crossing Texas from Sabine Point to El Paso and from the mouth of the Rio Grande to Palo Duro Canyon. Someone asked Craig “What are you going to do when you have criss crossed all of Texas”? Craig’s reply! Start all over again.

Reflections

December 30, 2009 | Filed Under Northernlight Filmworks | Leave a Comment

_

Every year we look back on our experiences and how they continue to shape who we are as individuals, filmmakers and our company as a whole.

2009 was another great year for Northernlight Filmworks and considering the economic climate we were blessed. Our business continues to grow in ways that we never expected.

Our year started off with an invitation from In[Focus] to contribute to their blog as experts in the field of wedding cinematography. We will be attending the In[Focus] workshops in Austin in January 2010. We are looking forward to meeting up with some of our filmmaking colleagues who we have met in person and online over a period of time. We have developed some professional relationships with other filmmakers from Russia, Mexico, Ireland, Turkey, Greece, Australia, Canada, Philippines, and England. It is amazing seeing the unique talents in the world. We would like to thank the crew at In[Focus] for providing us a great opportunity in contributing to the blog in 2009.

In March, John and Steve traveled to Haiti to work on a short documentary for Nehemiah Vision Ministries. This was a trip that had an impact on our lives. We often find ourselves thinking about the children back in the small village of Chambrun. It really is amazing how one person’s passion cannot be stopped when combined with a strong determination to accomplish something. Espérandieu L. Pierre is that person. He took an old hunting ground of dirt and brush, creating a school and a church for many sick and orphaned children, while at the same time teaching responsibility and love.

We also rebranded our company just a bit by working with Rhaya Shilts of Jackson Sky, who helped us create our new logo, website and blog. We feel so good about our new look because it reflects visually who we are and what we do and mirrors our style. The new branding is more cohesive, warm, inviting and playful.

Our weddings in 2009 were memorable and some very unique but the common thread among all of them is that the couples have been outstanding. We don’t consider them clients but more like friends. It is fun keeping track of them on Facebook and getting a message or seeing the announcement that they are expecting a new baby. It reminds us that the couple’s relationship is always evolving and we love looking back at their wedding day.

Event DV Cover002

In 2009, our work was been featured on a number of sites including In[Focus], The Brides Cafe, April Foster Events, and Canon Filmmakers. We were pleasantly surprised to be interviewed by EventDV Magazine, which is an international publication, to talk about our work. We were featured in the September issue of that magazine. LensFlare35 also interviewed John, which is a cool resource for photographers. Northernlight Filmworks was also the recipient of the Brides Choice Award given by Wedding Wire as being in the top 3% demonstrating excellent quality of service, responsiveness, value of cost and level of expertise in the wedding industry.

We would like to thank all of our wedding professionals that we worked with in 2009 and thank you very much for all of the referrals, we truly value our relationships.

Looking ahead, 2010 is going to be an exciting year for us and some new ventures and projects are in the works. Stay tuned to our blog so you can keep up to date with what we are doing.

Thank you to all of our friends (clients) for making 2009 a memorable one.

Happy New Year!

Sincerely,
John and Jennifer Moon

Katie + Eric: Omni Mount Washington Resort 11/7

December 30, 2009 | Filed Under Meg Simone | Leave a Comment

Katie + Eric were blanketed with good fortune and amazing weather for their picture perfect snow capped wedding day at the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, NH. Stunning all around! Ladies must watch to see all of Katie’s details and to learn about their story… and see her dress in part 2! (Which does end abruptly, but her actual video continues on, this is just a snippet for web.) My new favorite quote from Eric’s sister, “Who doesn’t love Katie…” and it’s true, she was instantly a friend :)

You are really the sweetest person. I can’t thank you enough for the beautiful job you did on our wedding video. What an amazing thing to have to remember our wedding forever.

I can’t tell you the amount of people we have had tell us what a delight you were at the wedding and also that you blended in so well. Most people didn’t even know you were there. Thank you for doing such an amazing job!! To be honest, I never dreamt the video would be as amazing as it is. I knew it would be great, but this seriously surpassed that! You are a master at what you do! You really chose the right profession!

If you ever need me to give any referrals for future brides and couples, please let me know, I would love to let them know how wonderful you are. – Katie
