Just a quick recap of the night! Cali, was a Groovy Girl, finally giving up her 3 year run as a princess; Rylie was still not feeling great after being sick all week, but didn't want to miss out on Trick or Treating so she just did a short stint around the block as a gothic something-or-rather and Taylor went as Bat Girl. Brian is loving the new 7D in low light! Hope you all had a fun, safeHappy Halloween

Nate + Maren = 8mm Film + Digital Film
October 31, 2009 | Filed Under David Perry Films | Leave a Comment
Nate & Maren are the quintessential love birds. My wife Danielle commented that it's wonderful to see a groom that is head over heels for the bride. Easy to see what a great guy Nate is. Maren is uber adorable with her charming smile and her attention to the wedding details is superb. Being the owner of http://www.elizabethandhomer.com/ shined through. Her tag line "Unmistakeably Unique. Unmistakably You." was the spring board for the approach to her wedding film being the only wedding I have ever mixed 8mm film and Digital film (Canon 5D MarkII). In fact, her wedding was the very first wedding I ever shot with the Canon 5D MarkII but I knew it was what we needed to keep it candid and classy. Interesting to contrast the vintage 8mm Film with the cutting edge super clean Digital Film! To make the transition between the two, I cut the natural audio during the 8mm Film sections and I also transcoded the Digital Film to 24p through Cineform's Neo Scene.
One of the highlights of the wedding was the Scottish Hand Clasping ceremony. This is where the phrase "Tying the Knot" originated. And I must say that any wedding with a piper is top notch in my book! (I come from the McNeil and McCullouch clans in Edinburgh). Nate & Maren presented their family with framed genealogical charts which was a very nice touch to show their gratitude and also recognize their great heritage.
Maren's friend custom made the dress, which I absolutely love and the little girls are just cute as Ill get out. They had a little tree where guests could hang their advice or congrats to the newlyweds and the cake by (Sugar Kisses Cakes) matched Maren's shoes and dress by Melissa at melissablackburn.net Audrey from Studio Stems did an amazing job with the flowers!!. Loved the details at this wedding!
We were fortunate to have my friend Duston Todd from www.dustontodd.com who shot entirely on film - and made a few cameos. He was cracking us up all day with his jokes and singing. Fun times, fun times.
Putting aside all the talk of cameras and frame rates, the best wedding films aren't about the equipment but better measured on the hug-o-meter. If it makes you want to hug someone after watching it then it's a success. All I have to say is be prepared to hug someone after watching this fun little clip.
Read about what Maren had to say on her blog and I hope you enjoy the film!

Check out this lovely couple who traveled from Texas to Santa Barbara to have their beautiful wedding at the Bacara Resort & Spa! I loved the color scheme & design at the wedding. Very stylish! We were thrilled to work with Rebecca of Imagine Weddings & Special events who coordinated everything for the happy couple. She is a pro and does amazing work! We were also able to work with Mulberry Photo who were super fun and took great photos. Check them out here on their blog! As you can see we also shot their rehearsal dinner which was filled with emotional and fun speeches. All in all, it was a beautiful day at the Bacara and we were so excited to film this memorable event!Elysium Productions: Stylish & Contemporary Wedding Video in Orange County and Beyond!

Re:Frame San Francisco or “How I Had To Stop Worrying and Love To Speak”

A year ago I was lucky enough to be one of the attendees of the first Re:Frame in New Orleans. There’s a saying: “Iron sharpens iron”. Meaning if you want to be the best you need to be around the best. And essentially that’s what Re:Frame is all about. The highest level of learning in wedding & event filmmaking in a small, intimate group setting. I came away from that first event so inspired and excited. It was a game changer. Wanting to experience more, I quickly signed up for the follow-up event in Austin.
It was there in Austin, the Re:Frame Collective, made up of Julie Hill from Elysium Productions, Bruce Patterson from Cloud Nine Creative, and Kristen* from Bliss Productions approached me to speak at the next event. Me?!! Stand in front of a group of people and teach them something?!! I can hold a mic, sing badly and do The Running Man to get some laughs… but say something intelligent and inspire creativity?!! Ummm…
Quick flashback to when I was in Junior High. Remember those days when you had to stand in front of the class and do oral reports? I hated them. And hated having to speak in front of people. Why? Because for some reason, I would break out in a cold sweat, get incredibly dizzy, and come seconds away from fainting each time I did. It was so bad sometimes I couldn’t even hear the words coming out of my mouth. I would have to put my head down when I returned to my desk relieved that I had survived such horrible torture.
Flashforward to Austin. “Sure!” I said to them as we strolled to the karaoke bar. O. M. G. Was I nuts?!! But it was time. I wanted to do this. My heart was so full… I wanted to give back and this was the opportunity.
So as nervous as I was, I came to Re:Frame San Francisco, ready to speak about my experience in the industry and hoping that at least one person would take something away from my talk. The good thing was that I had plenty of videos to share (so I would get to sit down, watch, drink lots of water and catch my breath - something they didn’t let you do in Jr. High). After some early jitters, I was able to get through my Concept Video presentation without passing out. Whoohoo!! It was actually a fun experience. The best part was being introduced by Jason Magbanua, the newest member of the RF Collective, a superstar in the world of wedding cinema, and good friend from the Philippines. That totally made my day.
If Re:Frame was a “trilogy”, then this third installment set in San Francisco was the biggest and baddest of them all. It was truly epic… like “The Return Of The King” or “Return Of The Jedi” (without the Ewoks). Although I was only able to attend the first half, I felt I had learned so much in the time I was there. Not only from the incredible speakers in our “classroom” sessions but during the in-between times just hanging out. So much fun. And it was fun watching the faces light up on all the first time attendees who I know went home inspired and excited as I was just one short year ago. I’ve been there, done that… and want to do it again and again and again.
Julie, Bruce, K*, and Jason: Thank You (x4). Look forward to the next Re:Frame!

Kip, Sasha & Ella

Kip is a photographer here in Seattle! We had been online friends via twitter for some time now but had never met in person. When Kip contacted us to do their family photos I was very flattered. From the moment that we met Kip in person we didn't stop talking. I felt an instant connection because we all share a love of photography, great music, travel, running and shows like Top Chef and Project Runway! They even understand my crazy pescatarian food choices (Sasha was a vegetarian once herself) and they adore Gilbert which makes me so happy!
One thing that stands out when you meet Kip & Sasha is how much they love Ella. And it is evident how much Ella adores them in return. I love it that they were able to be themselves in front of our lens and many of the things that we did during this shoot were inspired by their interaction with each other. We love this shoot because for us family sessions are less about posing people together and more about capturing a family's love at this stage of their life.

Kip & Sasha- Can't wait to see you guys again and Ella I promise next time I will make sure to play princesses with you longer!

home made breakfast and a quest to get the bride // basia + tomek’s sde
October 30, 2009 | Filed Under StillMotion | Leave a Comment
we just wrapped up the evolution experience 2.0 at stillmotion with twelve awesome people from around the world. during the 3 day workshop, a big part of what we tried to get across was to see things differently, and to find what is right in front of you but you never see.
this past saturday we had a pleasure to shoot basia and tomek’s wedding in hamilton. their day was a like a mini ‘workshop’ for us.
it’s so easy to focus on only the bride and groom, overlooking everything around them, such us preparing a home made polish breakfast. for them, this was part of their unique story. it can also be easy to get caught up just trying to cover the events as they are happening instead of interpreting them in our very own style. taking the time to think about your lens choice, composition, or the way in which you are shooting a sequence to communicate their story is a very effective way to push yourself to be a better storyteller.
along the way we watched the groomsmen undertake the quest to get in the bride’s house and witnessed the biggest crowd surrounding the couple during their first meeting and traditional blessing.
richer by a day full of love, fun and emotions, as well as an amazing response to the sde by their 300 family and friends, it certainly got us pumped for the workshop.
thank you basia and tomek :)
more to come about the evo experience this week.

United Wedding is always excited to work with a bride and groom before their actual wedding. We get to know them more as a couple and they get to see us in action. The combination of the two allows for a more inspired and more personable synergy on their actual wedding day. Artemis and Manolis are getting married at the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral and having their reception at Wyndham Virginia Crossings. We are looking forward to working with them again and we can't wait to meet the rest of their family members and friends. We are also looking forward to working with our good friends and awesome photographers, Dale and Roshan Quarterman of Quarterman Photography. I’m incredibly honored to be invited to present at the MIVA (Michigan Independent Video Association) this coming Wednesday, November 4th. My presentation will be on concept films and how they can transform your studio. I’ll be covering how to get started, advanced techniques, storyboarding and scripting methods as well as marketing. I love to inspire others as much as I’ve been inspired and I’m really looking forward to this. Good times with great people and I’m sure there will be an after party including hops and barley. You can find more information here. I hope to see you there!

I actually owe a lot to Ralph. We met weeks before their wedding and the subject matter digressed to comicbooks. He turned me on to the latest Green Lantern story arc - Blackest Night and its preludes. I immediately picked up a copy of the Sinestro Corps War.
It was totally “un-put-down-able” and was the best comic book I read all year and eagerly anticipated Blackest Night. It truly did what a great comick book did - take you away and leave you breathless.
I digress.
Ralph put a lot of thought to hi music selection for this Same Day Edit. It’s original music video was nothing short of genius and so the video had to keep up.
Here’s their SDE - watch Ralph take Bianca away and leave her breathless.

Jon + Elizabeth {A Boston Wedding}
October 30, 2009 | Filed Under Weddings By SML | Leave a Comment
I first started communicating with Elizabeth almost a year before her wedding. She was looking for a distinctive look in her wedding film and was having trouble finding it locally. We must have exchanged 25 emails before her and Jon decided to take a leap of faith and put their trust into our hands for the big day.Well, if that isn't pressure, I don't know what is, but I must say that I have yet to meet a more gracious and hospitable couple. It is so ironic that we only had to fly across the country to find them :-) When we first met with Elizabeth to go over the day's events, she was so easy to work with and she even gave us the quick nickel tour of our surroundings. . . . and when you are in Boston, you'll take anything you can get! Every building, every street, every crevice in Boston has a story. . .
Jon + Elizabeth were married in the heart of Boston, which gave them the opportunity to have their portraits taken in front of a 500 foot long reflection pond and the stunning architecture of the Church of Christian Science Headquarters (Home of the Christian Science Monitor). The scenery was jaw dropping and needless to say, our minds were running a million miles an hour with ways to shoot this one.
A couple of other fun details, Jon is an enormous Red Sox fan, of course, if you hang out in Boston long enough (and you don't originate from New York), I'm not sure how you couldn't be a Red Sox fan. So we added a few fun "sox" touches to this highlight, including iconic Fenway Park. Also, the two exchanged gifts before the ceremony. Jon coughed up the coins for a beautiful Tiffany's solitaire pendant necklace and well, Elizabeth. . . . . . she gave Jon a "for his eyes only" kind of gift (Had to promise we would shoot him opening it in silouette :-).
It was a shame we only had the opportunity to spend a few short hours with Jon + Elizabeth, but it was time well spent and we feel honored to have had the opportunity to fly over 3000 miles to document such a wonderful wedding.
A quick shout out to Catherine from Catherine Morris Photography. What fun to work with and if you are looking for a photograher in the New Hamshire area, she gets our vote for sure! She is coming out to California in February and we hope to meet up at that point to catch up!
Kat & Don | Wonderful As Loving Goes
October 30, 2009 | Filed Under Red 5 Studios | Leave a Comment
When Kat and Don found me they had to go half way around the world. Well, not literally. But with the help of the internet. They came across a brief mention of our studio on the Weddings At Work site, a website dedicated to helping brides and grooms plan weddings… in the Philippines! Thankfully, the wedding was right here in Southern California but Kat & Don’s wedding had all the charm of a celebration “back home”.
I always enjoy a ceremony that openly invites God to be a part of it. It is a reminder of how blessed I am in my own marriage. And if you see me hiding behind the viewfinder of my camera, it’s probably because I’m shedding a tear. Ya, I’ll admit it. I’m a sucker for weddings.
Kat & Don, God bless you in your new life together. Praise Him in the good times, praise Him in the tough times and always look to Him for strength and wisdom.
Check out their fun and fast paced Same Day Edit set to Dashboard Confessional’s “As Lovers Go”.

Todd and I returned last week from San Francisco and the Re:Frame Filmmakers conference. It was 4 days of intense shooting technique, business management, HD workflow, branding & marketing, creative storytelling techniques, social media and more.
We both learned so much during the 4 days and are exciting to putting those things into action as we move ahead into 2010. More than anything though, we were encouraged by all the relationships we built with other filmmakers around the world. We’re also very thankful to the 4 filmmaker who founded the Re:Frame Collective: Kristin Bliss, Bruce Patterson, Jason Magbanua and Julie Hill.
Here’s a few photos from our week in San Francisco.

Wed-Pick - Online Pricing Menu System
October 29, 2009 | Filed Under Aubert Films | Leave a Comment

** This post is for other wedding professionals.
One of my good photographer friends, Mark Gardner, designed a great tool for wedding professionals who do a lot of online bookings. It’s called Wed-Pick. Basically Wed-Pick allows you to build an online pricing menu that clients can use to build their own packages. Using check boxes and drop down menus, a client can change parameters of his/her package and then submit that package to you.
This tool has been so helpful for me when consulting with clients. In the past I could never find a good way to display my pricing that made sense and was usable by the client. I used to send pdfs, docs, etc. etc. Wed-Pick has totally changed that. Now I simply send my clients to my wed-pick page and they can build their package exactly the way they want AND submit it to me through wed-pick. Now all I need to do is send them an email with their contract and they’ve just booked a wonderful Philadelphia wedding video.
There are other services out there that offer similar products, but none of them are as affordable and easy as wed-pick. For those of you looking for an inexpensive way of displaying your pricing that is interactive and WORKS… check out the $99 Wed-Pick.
