As a wedding professional, I subscribe to newsletters to stay educated, informed, and up to date on friends/colleagues work. As a bride/groom to be, I highly recommend subscribing to professional newsletters as a way to learn helpful tips, others prospectives on wedding day experiences, and possibly even get a deal – you never know if someone is going to offer a “special” to newsletter subscribers :)

jsnewsletter

Jennifer Stone is an amazing photographer based out of Maine whose work I have been following for a few years now. I then met her at the Maine Wedding Woman Photographers luncheon in April 2008. I was honored when she asked if she could feature me in her newsletter… of course! Thanks to Jennifer, I was so excited when just a few weeks before their wedding, Shannon and Ray called to see if I still had their day open. I did :) It was meant to be! Not only did I finally get to work with Jennifer, I met this amazing couple. Both experiences I’m forever grateful for. Jennifer was so easy to work with and FUN! As you can see from her work (on her site and super cool blog) she loves meeting new people and telling their stories too, “with a blend of documentary, candid, and fashion photography.”

I love getting newsletters to hear the latest ideas and inspiration – and Jennifer hit the nail on the head with “The First Look” something not as many couples consider, I think because of tradition (groom first seeing bride as she walks down the isle)… but I think if you read here… you will see this alternative could have more meaning for you as a couple, and give you a more intimate moment to reflect back on.  Head on over to Jennifers Blog and subscribe to her newsletter for more helpful wedding ideas, and advice :)

Thanks for the newsletter feature Jennifer!

{Re:Frame San Francisco} October 19-22, 2009

September 30, 2009 | Filed Under Cloud Nine Creative | Leave a Comment

In a few weeks 3 colleagues of mine (and co-owners of the Re:Frame Collective) will be putting on our 3rd conference in less than a year. As many of you know, these conferences are aimed at helping educate videographers on how to bring their businesses to the next level. This time we have invited speakers from the UK, Russia, the Philippines, the US and of course, Canada to come and either speak to the attendees or participate in our unique hands-on workshops. There are only a few seats left (literally) so if you’re interested in finding out more about event videography, I encourage you to take a look at our website to see if this conference may be of interest to you. Here’s the link.

Hope to see you in a few short weeks in the city by the bay!

Our Wedding: The Embellishments

September 30, 2009 | Filed Under Vanessa McKellar Productions | Leave a Comment

Previously in this series- Our Wedding: The Ribbon

So I was finally done with ribbon, but I still needed bling to carry out my whole crystal motif idea.

First I ordered dozens of clear Swarovsky crystals from an online bead shop. Then I twisted them one by one onto the end of pieces of gold wire, and I now had my bouquet bling. I gave them to the florist to incorporate into the flowers.

I also purchased some cheap plastic clear beads and wired them, and used them in the centerpieces (those are the ones shown in the first picture, and here they are in the pew arrangements/centerpieces).

Next, armed with my trusty 40% off coupon, I ordered and purchased and entire bolt of crystal trim. I used this to wrap my bouquet, Brent's boutonniere, and the cake layers. What's great is that I've been able to use all these embellishments post-wedding in my gift wrapping.

Whew, after writing all this out I can imagine it looks like I spent way too much energy on my wedding details. And maybe for the average bride, that would be true. But not for me! I would do it all over in a heartbeat because it's what excites me and gives me energy.

Meghan and Jamison... wow! Their magical wedding in Orlando was simply incredible. Kyle Fasanella joined our team with some amazing Steadicam work and captured some unbelievable footage. The blasts in the sky were an awesome sight, but the real fireworks came from this lovely new family. Enjoy their trailer!

DIY Master – June & Kei

September 30, 2009 | Filed Under Givefunla | Leave a Comment

June & Kei applied much DIY item in their wedding: wedding ring pillow, invitation card, dolls at the front of the car, decorations… and all items were consistent in purple color, very pretty.

There’re so many familiar faces in this wedding. Two couples in the bridesmaids & groomsmen have used our service before on their wedding. Also a bride to be was one of the guest in the ceremony.  It’s a very good feeling to meet old friends, ha ha. They all choose difference photographers, but all of them choose us to prepare their video production. ha ha.

Their wedding ceremony was held in the roof of their home, small and intimacy. Specially when everybody held the umbrella and keep close together. Typhoon signal no. 1 was held and rain for almost all day. Luckymui add a little bit blue and purple color on the video, can you notice it?

Nice to work with photographer Irene Chui again :)

Here is the same day edit! Happy that they chose a Chinese song!

Hidden Meadows - Rachael & Mike

September 30, 2009 | Filed Under Edit 1 Media | Leave a Comment

At the beginning of August I got a phone call from Rachael’s mom who REALLY wanted us to do a video for her daughter…more specifically she especially wanted a Same Day Edit. It was already a busy day for us, but luckily Garrett, Wes and Andrew were able to head up to Hidden Meadows a few weeks ago and put together an awesome video for their family and guests to enjoy at the reception. Garrett did a great job putting together a video that really showed how joyful Rachael and Mike were that day! We are so lucky to have such amazing people join our team to help shoot and do Same Day Edits on those weekends where we have extra demand (can you say Saturday’s in August??).

We had the pleasure of photographing Joy and Mark’s wedding on the ‘carnival of flowers’ weekend. It was a wonderful wedding – very emotional and lots of fun too. Tyson (their furry baby) NEARLY stole the show – he was super cute.

Here is a sneak peek!

Our brides sometimes wonder what their video might look like, since they usually only see highlights posted here on the blog. So today I thought I'd give you all a special treat and show you an entire wedding day through a short-form edit. Short-form videos seem to be taking the wedding videography industry by storm, and not only are they fun to watch, they're fun to edit!

So what is a short-form? It's essentially a "fast-forward free" version of your video that runs about 20 to 30 minutes. The ceremony, first dances, toasts, etc. are all condensed, and the full-length uncut version of each is also included as a separate chapter on your DVD. So when you have your friends over to watch your video, they'll be thoroughly entertained the whole time. This is something that we offer as an upgrade so feel free to ask about it.

Jessica and Adrian had a very beautiful wedding in Houston with a swanky downtown reception. Even if you don't watch the whole video, be sure to watch through to the "first look"- it's a very touching moment. And look closely at the bouquet toss and see if you recognize who caught it!

Nic & Cam: My Behind-the-Scenes Video!

September 29, 2009 | Filed Under Vanessa McKellar Productions | Leave a Comment

Previously in this series- Nic & Cam: The Photos Part III

Oh boy folks I'm so excited about this post! Today I unveil to you the video I made of Nicole and Cameron's wedding weekend. Since I was a matron of honor and therefore unable to be the official videographer, I ended up just carrying my little 5D around and taking informal photos and videos of the events. At times it was a bit distracting for me, but I felt that it would be worth it and I think I was right. What we have here is a simple documentary edit (no slow-mo or effects or anything) that I think gives a really authentic look into the weekend.

In it you'll see:

The Bachelorette Party: Beware because there is much silliness here. Nicole and her best friend Krista (aka Berta- they both call each other Roberta for some unknown reason) like to be pretty extreme with the silliness. I love it! You'll also hear the phrase, "Repeat! This is not how I normally act!" To find out where this came from, check this out. (Sorry Nicole, I just had to.)

The Ladies Brunch: Our lovely grandma and cousin put together a yummy brunch for us, and this is where you'll see Nicole give us our hand-woven bridesmaid gifts. We're so glad to have some great video and pictures of us with our grandmas.

The Rehearsal: Only one shot of this. I was too busy catching up!

The Wedding Day: I basically follow Nicole around from the first thing in the morning all the way to boogying on the dance floor. Nicole was such a great subject- oozing excitement and inviting me in to parake of all her emotions. No ceremony footage here because both Brent and I wanted to really enter into the solemnity of the occasion.

A few shots in there are Brent's. We like this pic Casey took of us enjoying Nicole's crazy antics.

I wish we could do it all over again, it was so much fun!

Michelle & Kyle: A Love Story

September 29, 2009 | Filed Under Vanessa McKellar Productions | Leave a Comment

When Michelle asked me to create a Love Story video for her and her fiance Kyle, I was thrilled. And even more so when she asked me to come to College Station and film at Kyle Field. This iconic location has very special signifiance for the two of them, as you'll see in the video. And of course, the century tree had to make an appearance too!

These two have known each other for a long time now and I was honored to be able to tell their story through video. Michelle was a little worried that Kyle, who is a pilot for the military, would be shy in front of the camera. But as you can see he was able to express himself beautifully and I know it means a lot to Michelle. She told me she cries every time she watches it!

The Maresch Family ‘09

September 29, 2009 | Filed Under Vanessa McKellar Productions | Leave a Comment

A while back you saw Brent's experimental edit of our annual Maresch family shoot. The parents finally decided on a song for the "real" edit and now I've completed it. It's different than Brent's- softer, gentler, sweeter, I think. I wanted to focus on the kids' adorable faces and the way they look interacting with their environment. I threw in some shots of the carnival rides for a little spice and to allow the viewer to "rest" their eyes for a moment. It's interesting how those ride shots somehow remind me of a graceful ballet dance.

These kids are so sweet. When they played the little rubber ducky game and were able to pick out any toy they wanted, after much deliberation they all ended up picking out the red "Love" teddy bear after the oldest chose that one first. They love each other so much and get along so well; I hope my kids are just like them!

Jana & Nathan

September 29, 2009 | Filed Under Vanessa McKellar Productions | Leave a Comment

Jana and Nathan are a lovely couple, and they have a rather unique story. You see, the day after they returned home from their honeymoon, Jana was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. As you can imagine, some trying days ensued and their vows were truly put into action. Nathan supported his bride with optimism and love, and as of a few days ago, I'm thrilled to say that the cancer is now in remission! I was especially honored to be able to make their video, because it was something Jana looked forward to to cheer her up and brighten her time in chemo.

Jana chose the song "Feels Like Home" for their highlights montage, and when you listen to the words in light of their situation, it's just so touching.

A window breaks, down a long, dark street
And a siren wails in the night
But I'm alright, cause I have you here with me
And I can almost see, through the dark there is light
Well, if you knew how much this moment means to me
And how long I've waited for your touch
And if you knew how happy you are making me
I never thought that I'd love anyone so much

It feels like home to me

Jana said, "Everyone loved the video. I was crying in the first 5 minutes of it. You really captured everything, I loved how you could hear the birds chirping in the background!! I didn't really remember much of the wedding until I got my video and it made me remember everything from that night. Thank you so much for all of your work. I loved my video!!!"

Our Wedding: The Ribbon

September 29, 2009 | Filed Under Vanessa McKellar Productions | Leave a Comment

Previously in this series- Our Wedding: Buzzwords and Motif

This post about my wedding is going to be really specific (and possibly mundane for any of you male readers), but incidentally, finding the embellishments for the big day proved to be one of my favorite parts of the entire planning process. I think it's because I was really able to let my creative side loose, and I had complete control (no relying on other vendors), and I got to SHOP! Plus I think I'm a detail person (aka perfectionist), so it was fun honing in on all these little particulars.

I wanted some really special ribbon, so I did an online search and found a ribbon and button store near Dallas. When I was in the area one weekend I took an afternoon to visit the shop and pour over notions. Seriously folks, I think this was quite possibly the apex of my planning experience! I spent several hours there and came away with the floral ribbon to wrap around the layers of my cake, and a beautifully textured gold ribbon to wrap the bridesmaids bouquets. Now this may sound like way too much time and trouble for a few yards of ribbon, but you have to understand that the process was just as important for me as the result, so to me it was time well spent.

(This is a picture from my wedding scrapbook; the blue background is a swatch of my bridesmaid dress fabric.)

I still needed more ribbon, so I went online to Masterstroke Canada (a resource I found in the back of a Martha Stewart Weddings magazine) and ordered some coral-colored swatches. When those came in I picked my favorites and ordered a yard or two of each. Most of these ribbons were to be used on my flower girl's little posy, trailing down. I can't find a picture of that, but here's a picture of some of the wider ribbon beautifying my parents' dog Rose, who was a surprise "honorary guest" at the ceremony.

And I still wasn't done with ribbon! Next I headed to a Tyler fabric, furniture, and trim shop, Bufe and Babin. I spent hours here too and found the gold and blue narrow trim you see pictured above. That's what I used to wrap the groomsmen's boutonnieres. I also found my "signature" fabric here, which I think I'll have to blog about in another post.

Check back tomorrow to read about where I found our "Bling"!

///Sheryl, Devin, Charlotte & Ella on the way///

September 29, 2009 | Filed Under MIND|Castle Studios | Leave a Comment

I am going to be an auntie!! Devin is Casey's cousin. Devin and Sheryl have been together for a long time and they got married about a year after Casey and I started dating.

Casey's family was so excited when they found out Sheryl was pregnant. It will be the first grandchild on their side and GaGa (Casey's grandma) has been hoping that she would get a great grand child sometime very soon. I swear for the last 6 years every time Sheryl was sick Gaga would say "i hope that means she's pregnant!" And now that has become a reality. Gaga has even started working on me about having a baby. I told her she will have to wait a while for me to have a baby and the best she can hope for is the four legged furry type of child (aka gilbert).

Last weekend I went home to visit my mom for her birthday and also to attend Sheryl's baby shower. I have been feeling pretty lonely lately because Casey has been out of town for a week so it was great to hang out with family, eat homemade cupcakes and relax. Sheryl cut my hair, we went and got pedicures, watched movies then went to a volleyball game.

Sheryl really wanted to get some photos of her belly before Ella is born so I ventured out with them (plus their furry baby Charlotte) to capture this moment of excitement in their lives. I think Devin was a little hesitant when I asked him to lay in the grass/mud/dirt. But in the end it was all worth it!

Some technical things: my 50mm 1.2 is broken and is being sent in to be fixed so I used a 24 1.4 and my 45 tilt-shift for this shoot. Since I wasn't able to do the normal things that I do with the 50, I felt really challenged to try new things. I am super happy with how they turned out, however that means I am going to be buying some more lenses!

past due // alan + marianne

September 29, 2009 | Filed Under StillMotion | Leave a Comment

we shot alan and marianne’s post-wedding shoot a while back. i think it was actually towards the end of may. i think that part of the reason i didn’t want to post their images on the blog at first was because they were all so good (excuse the tooting of the horn), that i didn’t think i would do the shoot justice by posting 5 or 6 images.

they flew in from vancouver with the hopes that we would go out for a shoot, photo and cinema, and they would come back home with some really nice images. we surprised them. we surprised ourselves.

the shoot was supposed to be 2, maybe 3 hours. we started shooting at 4:30 or so and went all the way to midnight. it was one of the most fun shoots we’ve ever done.

here’s what we went into the shoot knowing:
// they’ve been together for 16 years.
// they aren’t lovey dovey. come on. they’ve been together for 16 years!
// they fly a lot to visit family, so airports are a big part of their lives.
// she loves her dress. so we’re doing part of the shoot in her real dress to get some really different pictures, and the rest in a secondary dress that she cares less about.
// she’s hoping it doesn’t rain. we’re REALLY hoping it does.

here’s what we came up with.

Hannah & David, a Same Day Edit at St Audries Park, Somerset

September 29, 2009 | Filed Under Ever After Videos | Leave a Comment

This past Saturday we were in Somerset at St Audries Park filming the wedding of Hannah and David. It turned out to be one very gorgeous day, stunning venue, beautiful bride, handsome groom, great weather, … everything just seemed to turn out perfectly.

We also made a Same Day Edit that day which we projected in the evening just before first dance and the fireworks.

But the celebrations didn’t end there. Yesterday, they had a second day of festivities in York with all kinds of Chinese wedding traditions, from firecrackers and dancing dragons to a tea ceremony and a fantastic traditional Chinese wedding banquet (with some very interesting items on the menu, I had never eaten jellyfish or abalone before!).

All in all,  a few jam-packed but fun filled days.

I hope you enjoy their Same Day Edit, please do feel free to leave us a comment.

And stay tuned, because later this week we’ll be announcing some marvellous news about a recent trip to the WEVA Convention in Orlando.  Also, this weekend we’ll be off to continental Europe to cover a wedding back in Belgium.
