The Makeup Studio

May 30, 2009 | Filed Under Jason Magbanua | Wedding Videographer | Leave a Comment

We had the greatest opportunity to create this special video for Madge Lejano and Xeng Zulueta’s The Makeup Studio.

More than anything it was the concept and philosophy we were focusing on with this piece. So it took an inordinate amount of texts between me and the the two of them to precisely hone the message we wanted to put across.

They screened this at the their new studio’s unveiling last Monday.

The Makeup Studio from Jason Magbanua on Vimeo.

PS:  I did not want to re-format the text for web and run the risk of inelegance - (I used a fine Helvetica type) - so you may have difficulty reading the text,  for your convenience - here’s the type -

There is no one standard of beauty
There is only boundless appreciation
There is no single method
Only limitless inspiration
There are a multitude of tools
But it is in passion that we thrive on
The finest professionals
The kindest of people
A new concept of beauty
Unveiled
Reveal not how perfect your makeup is,
But how beautiful you really are

Nate & Ashley’s Wedding

May 30, 2009 | Filed Under David Perry Films | Leave a Comment

Nate & Ashley are the best. They were so easy going and positive on their big day. We had to stop over at the Lion House for some awesome rolls to take a break from the sun.

Yet another one of my doc style weddings. I've been shooting a lot on the Canon 5DMK2 and I just love it! Of course I'm still shooting on video (like today's wedding at the Draper Temple) if you prefer that style.

Remembering My Mom - A Year Later

May 29, 2009 | Filed Under Blade Ronner: The Blog Of Ron Dawson | Leave a Comment

Today marks the one year anniversary of my mom’s passing. This is an excerpt from the memorial service held June 3, 2008. It’s my daughter singing “Fragile Heart” by Yolanda Adams. Took me a year to watch it.

It was 18 months between the time I saw my mom last and when she died. As I wrote in my original tribute post last year, take time out for those you love. Don’t let too much time go by without saying how you feel about them. And above all esle, keep everything in life in it’s proper perspective.

I miss you mom.

I really wish Ted rhymed with Kate, that would be funny… or maybe not. Anyway, my ULTRA RAD friends Kortnee and Ted have made a HUGE leap and changed their name, branding, everything. Gone is Simply Timeless, enter the new Kortnee Kate Photography, sounds pretty sweet huh?! I truly love working with them. They’re fun, energetic, good looking, a lot like me, hee hee! So when they approached me about producing a promo for them, I couldn’t wait to get started. Actually some of the shots in the promo were filmed six or seven months ago and were itching to come to life on the screen. I even threw some super 8 in there for a little added flavor! Josh and I had a blast with them filming the interview sections and could make a two hour feature from the out takes, perhaps you’ll see that soon! So there you have it, check out their new digs. Its probably one of the coolest websites I’ve ever seen, very funky and fresh!

USA Trip

May 29, 2009 | Filed Under D'nM Video Productions | Leave a Comment

I recently returned from the most amazing 2 weeks in the USA. What an awesome trip! I could write volumes about the whole trip - but will attempt to keep this post to a readable length and will just mention some highlights.

1) Erin & TJ's wedding
A definite highlight for me was filming with Elysium Productions in Orange County (just south of Los Angeles). In what was a truly spectacular wedding at the most amazing venue, I was very privileged to film alongside Alex & Julie Hill. What a great experience to see the Elysium team in action and to be a part of the team for a day. The team put together a same-day-edit which is playable below.

I would like to thank Alex & Julie for being so welcoming and for allowing me to contribute to such a great wedding film. I can't wait to see the Arthouse edit, including the footage from the Canon 5D MK2.

2) Re:Frame - Austin, TX
The main reason I flew to America was to attend the Re:Frame event in Austin, Texas. Re:Frame is an educational event put together by four of the top wedding filmmakers in the world - and featured 7 amazing presentations.

The workshops featured presentations by:
* Julie Hill of Elysium Productions.
* Patrick Moreau and Konrad Cyzstowski of Still Motion.
* Bruce Patterson of Cloud Nine Creative.
* Jason Magbanua.
* Kristen * of Bliss Productions.
* Chris Jones of Mason Jar Films.
* Philip Bloom.

It was a truly amazing event; not only for the information and education that I got from the presentations, but also for what I learned from the other attendees. There were so many extremely talented wedding filmmakers attending, who I am now proud to call friends. It was so much fun meeting everyone!

I think it's worth noting that there were only 4 Australian wedding filmmakers there. This is indicative to me of a rare dedication to our art by only a select few. The Australian representatives were Matt Ebenezer (Shadowplay - Toowoomba, QLD), Evro & Helen Moudanie (Moudanier Pictures - Sydney), Abraham Joffe (Abraham Joffe Videographers - Sydney) and myself.

re:frameAt the Re:Frame 'Shootout'. L-R (Abraham Joffe, Dave Cowling, Tom Pehrson).

There were many gems of information within each of the presentations. I am very excited about putting all I learned into action. One of the standout presentations was from Patrick and Konrad from Still Motion. Any wedding videographers who want to take their work and business to a new level should definitely join us at the Still Motion workshops in February 2010. Log on to www.stillmotionexperience.com for more details.

3) NAB trade show - Las Vegas
The first part of the trip was in Las Vegas where the world's largest video trade show was being held. NAB is HUGE! There are so many companies exhibiting there that it was hard to know where to start. Abraham and I will be presenting at the next AVPA Sydney meeting on some of the highlights.

One thing that definitely stood out to us was the buzz around the new DSLR cameras - such as the Canon 5DMKII and the new Lumix DMC-GH1. In the right hands, the images coming from these cameras are simply amazing. (You can see a sample right here on our blog). There were many support options for these cameras on show. One of the most popular stands was the Cinevate booth - which featured various setups for the 5D, Brevis 35mm adapters and rail and slider systems.

Aside from the trade show, Las Vegas was so much fun! We met a bunch of great people, saw as many of the casinos as possible and also caught Cirque Du Soleil's "O" at the Bellagio which was fantastic!

4) A couple of days in Los Angeles

We were also fortunate to have a couple of days in Los Angeles. That included catching up with some local videography legends (pictured above), as well as a day at Magic Mountain - which is heaven for a roller-coaster addict like myself! Plus I also spent a day with Alex & Julie seeing some of the sights of Hollywood and Santa Monica ... I even got to meet Spongebob Squarepants (which impressed my kids!).

magic mountainAbe & I on board "Goliath" @ Magic Mountain for the 3rd time!
I love the game Roller Coaster Tycoon - and this was just like walking around inside the game :) I loved it!

Thanks to everyone I met for making it such an amazing trip and for being so awesome! Can't wait to get back there, or to see you down here in Oz!

behind the stories- wedding weekend

May 28, 2009 | Filed Under HumanStory Wedding Day Films | Leave a Comment

This year I seem to be doing more traveling than ever shooting weddings.   I have to admit that I really have enjoyed these shoots quite a bit.   Not because I am traveling to exotic locals.  I am not.   In fact, I have travelled to many small towns and even some places that I have never heard of.

What I have grown to love about these traveling weddings is the experience of being totally  immersed in the events of the whole wedding weekend.   To meet and interview family and friends on the rehearsal day and the wedding day.    To feel the excitement when people come together for the  first time with people they haven’t seen  for years.   I see how they interact during the rehearsal and the dinner that usually follows.  I see the big moments and the quiet intimate ones too. The event is actually much bigger than just a one hour ceremony.

Not too long ago, I saw the film Rachel Getting Married.   That film reminded me that,  not only are families wonderfully complex, but  it also reminded me of how  all of the amazing and moving and funny and strange family stories seem to bubble to the surface during the wedding weekend.    It is an incredible thing to witness as an outsider.

I attended a wedding last fall in Staunton, Virginia, a beautiful town in the Shenandoah Valley.     I was invited to document the wedding weekend of Jamie and Greg.  They are a fascinating couple with a great story.   However, it was all of the stories told by the family and friends that really made me appreciate the fact that the wedding was not really about just this couple.      It was also  about  their families and friends.  It was about  the past and present and, most certainly, about the hope for the future.    But, somehow, this wedding was also about me.   Somehow, watching a wedding weekend unfold  like this  affected how I look at the story of my own life.   It’s funny how that happens.

I have had several wedding weekends I have attended this year and several more to come.   It is really amazing how each one is so different and each shows me a little bit about the world that I didn’t know existed just a week before.

I guess it is always possible to get tired of traveling, to forget about the importance of these events.   I really hope that never happens.  Or if it does, I hope that I have someone who cares about me enough to give me a kick in the ass to remind me of how lucky I am.

Take care.  Gotta pack.

What some people do in a changing economy…

May 28, 2009 | Filed Under JC/DV Productions | Leave a Comment

It is in a person’s nature to find the best deal for a product and/or service and I certainly understand this for commodity items/products which are readily available from a variety of sources.   I also suppose this type of shopping occurs widely in service industries as well.   However, some people take it to the maximum extreme and this video clip shows it well.  I am fortunate that our clients choose to hire us based on our quality of products and services and I am also blessed that I’m not selling commodity items that often go for bottom dollar on the open market.

Click here to view the embedded video.

My favorite line in this was when the male guest at the restaurant mentions the “beef” and the waiter says that he had the filet and the male guest then responds “cow”.  Unfortunately, many people still see the term “wedding video” and don’t really realize that there are “taco-wedding videos” and “filet-wedding videos”… mainly because of many other variables–that will be another post some day.

PS… we did not make this.

Same Day Wedding Edit Process: Telling the Story

May 28, 2009 | Filed Under Vivid Wedding Films | Leave a Comment

How to do a Same Day Wedding Edit: Part One

This is the first part of a series of posts describing how Vivid Wedding Films puts together a Same Day Wedding edit.

One of the things we love most about producing wedding films is the story behind each couple. Good visuals, lighting and audio are very important, but if you can’t tell a story, then your film won’t add up to much.

We pride ourselves on being great story-tellers at every level of the production. It begins with the way we film – what you capture through your lens is much like the “ideas and words” authors use to tell stories. While filming, we’re already beginning to think about the edit and how we’ll tell the story – and without a doubt, each story is unique. Being able to see the story unfold before us is what separates us from a lot of wedding videographers.

Editing a Same Day Edit + Love Story is sort of like reverse-engineering the story – or edit. After interviewing the couple, we begin to piece together their story, while thinking about how it will integrate with shots from their actual wedding day. As you can see in the photo below, we leave “gaps” in the story for which images and audio from the day will occupy.

For us, this is the fun part: not knowing exactly how the story will unfold and being flexible enough to alter any ideas we had going into the day. As we lead up to Meredith and Mark’s Same Day Edit, June 19th, we’ll be passing along more insight into the process of “telling their story” using the Same Day Edit + Love Story.

Castle In The Clouds: Historic NH Wedding Venue

May 28, 2009 | Filed Under Meg Simone | Leave a Comment

This is a long awaited blog post from my sister Mia’s wedding, July 19, 2008 at The Castle in the Clouds, Moultonborough, NH.  For starters, Friday night we had the rehearsal dinner on the Winnie Bell* and after the girls went back to the Gunstock Suite at Church Landing. The Castle does not have on site lodging, so guests were spread out around the surrounding area. What an amazing experience to be a guest at Church Landing! It was a dream come true, seeing that every time I film a wedding there I am always itching to swim in the lake, use the indoor-outdoor pool and cozy up with good company on the oversized chairs and pillow puffed beds! We did a little hot tubbing before retiring up to the room for the night. The weather was looking good - your typical July summer day.

The Castle’s wedding coordinator, Jessica Keefe was a huge help the day of. She knew exactly what Mia wanted to do with the room, so as we got ready off site, she orchestrated the vendors and by the time we arrived Mia was in awe with nothing left to do or worry about. If you haven’t been to the Castle, it’s a spectacular turn-of-the-century 16-room Arts & Crafts mansion on a pristine 5500-acre mountaintop estate overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee.  Typically the wedding ceremony takes place up at “The Castle” and guests Trolley up from the Carriage House (see clip 2).

Clip 1: The focus on this video clip is to show you as much of the grounds at the Castle as possible. It starts as my dad is wrapping up his speech so you can see the upper level banquet room in The Carriage House (Mia did a long table setting they do have rounds). It shows various parts of the grounds and also the bridal room where the wedding party can escape to freshen up. The DJ is DJ Matt Spofford (see my vendor list)

Clip 2: You must Trolley up to The Castle Garden for the ceremony. If a typical July shower has you worried, I recommend getting guests up to the Castle anyway, because chances are it’s going to pass in minutes like it did for Mia and John. I must say a passing shower in July is not uncommon, so be patient and the staff, with the help of a few groomsmen can have the seats dried off and guests seated in less then 5 minutes. It was perfect, and The Castle did an amazing job keeping people worry free about the weather.

Castle in the Clouds - Moultonborough, NH Wedding from meg simone on Vimeo.

As the ceremony starts you are introduced to the magic of The Castle Garden. Spectacular sweeping 180+ degree views, romantic, elegant, lush gardens, and white padded chairs all add to the elegance of the surroundings. The Carriage House boasts beautiful views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Belknap Mountains of the Lakes Region!  The banquet room area includes spacious lounge, bridal room, coat room and private rest rooms for event guests.

*A added bonus:  For  anyone planning a wedding around Lake Winnipesaukee, I can say from experience a boat cruise on the Winnie Bell is a must for your guests (at least list it as an option for them to do on their own time while in town). This is ideal for showing guests parts of the lake you may have summered on, and just the magnificant scenery of the Lakes Region and White Mountains of New Hampshire.
