Zerina and Louie Suavengco: Nuestra Senora De Gracia

December 31, 2008 | Filed Under Jason Magbanua | Wedding Videographer | Leave a Comment

Mid-month last December, we got the chance to shoot in one of our favorite churches in Manila Nuestra Senora de Gracia in Guadalupe.

This church is beautiful. From the old stone facade to the glowing yellow and green interiors provided by the stained glass.

If anybody was going to give out awards for best impromptu vows, I think Louie should take the win. Find out why …

Heath and Samara - Wedding Teaser

December 30, 2008 | Filed Under Shadowplay Photography & Video | Leave a Comment

I know Katie and I have been posting a lot lately … we’re meant to be on holidays! But, we are so excited about Heath and Samara’s wedding photos and video that we just couldn’t resist sharing.

You may remember Heath and Samara’s epic engagement shoot from a few months ago.

In preparing for Heath and Samara’s wedding, Katie and I were worried that we wouldn’t be able to top the photos and video from their engagement shoot.

On the day of the wedding, a menacing storm stalked us the entire day and when it came time for the photo session we needed to decide whether to stay safely indoors or press on to the chosen location (about 25 minutes drive).

It was a gamble either way. Do we stay or do we go? With a gorgeous couple waiting and a storm at our heels, we requested divine providence and went for it.

For Katie and I to take credit for what happened next would be, in my opinion, quite presumptuous.

The resulting images are ones that couldn’t have been staged, captured or recreated at any other moment in time. Heath and Samara’s moment.

Jay & Michelle - Same Day Edit

December 30, 2008 | Filed Under Epic Motion, Northernlight Filmworks | Leave a Comment

Jay & Michelle - Same Day Edit from Northernlight Filmworks on Vimeo.

We had an amazing time getting to know Jay and Michelle, another great and memorable couple. It was simply a storybook wedding from the very beginning all the way to the wedding day. We filmed their love story video and we really learned a lot about them. Jay and Michelle could easily be our friends, the Priest made that same comment.

The wedding day was a very cold day but well worth the trip to Lafayette. When we arrived at the church to prepare for set up a couple hours before, there was a funeral mass ending. My immediate thought was, here was a family grieving over the loss of a family member and a friend. I wondered who he or she was and what they may have been or done in their life. What mark did they leave? Here we were to prepare for a day of celebration. In a sense one life ending while another young couple begins theirs. I try to always look at things and figure out what they might mean. In this instance, I think God was just reminding me that life is short and even in death, there is a celebration of ones life. As in marriage, you are celebrating the beginning of the couples life as husband and wife. I wonder what mark I will leave?

This video is a Same Day Edit video. It is a Highlight of the days events leading up to and including the wedding ceremony. Same Day Edits can be logistically challenging and needless to say, very stressful to pull off. They require a lot of preplanning and coordination. Thanks to Ryan Koral of Epic Motion in Michigan for giving me a hand with some Glidecam work and thanks to Erik Muzzy for helping out where needed. We have a very small window to digitize the footage and edit it together and then we print to tape. We can't spend the normal amount of time we usually do to color grade the work. I remember Jennifer running down the hall toward me with the final product in hand so that we could stay on our target time. There is that brief moment of when you dim the lights and hit play that you bite your nails hoping that the facility hooked up everything correctly and that our piece was coded correctly and ta da there it is!

Here is a sneak peek from Heath and Samara’s wedding on Sunday!

Samara looked absolutely stunning and Heath was certainly a handsome groom. The ceremony was full of emotion and laughter.

All afternoon we were stalked by a massive storm. Luckily enough we completed the photo session with literally minutes to spare. Check out the video at the bottom of this post to see the downpour that hit about 2 minutes after we all reached our cars!

There will be heaps more photos to come!

2008 RECAP

December 29, 2008 | Filed Under Shadowplay Photography & Video | Leave a Comment

2008 has was a very exciting year for us.  Who knew you could achieve so much in a year!

Katie’s child and maternity photography business, Katie Finn Photography, started the year busy as ever.  Matt kicked off the year concentrating mainly on his corporate video work and TV commercials.

In early May we came up with an idea - to join forces and start “Shadowplay Photography and Video”.

So, in June we officially launched Shadowplay with a shindig at our studio. Since then it’s just been crazy!!!! We’ve had an awesome first 6 months with Shadowplay - photographing gorgeous couples, beautiful brides and lots of formal girls! We can’t wait to see where the future takes us!

Next year we plan to continue growing Shadowplay Photography and Video. We’ve got some wonderful weddings booked in for 2009 and we’ll also be heading over to America and Europe in April/May/June (which we are very excited about!!)

Again, we’d like to thank those who check out our blog regularly - it’s been really fun getting your comments and sharing our work with you!

Have a great New Year’s Eve, we’ll see you again in 2009!

Here are some of our favourite photos from 2008.

A Dutch bridal prep with a hint of rugby…

December 29, 2008 | Filed Under Ever After Videos | Leave a Comment

As promised, some more wedding video clips! This is Alexandra and David’s wedding, they got married this past summer in the beautiful Kent countryside, with the ceremony at St James’ Church in Sheldwich and the reception at the groom’s parents’ stunning farmhouse.
It’s been a while since I’ve put in a bridal prep clip, so that’s what I’ve got for you today. Bridal preps are my favourite part of the day to film, this is where all the months of planning finally come together. The anticipation and excitement, it’s just so much fun and I love being a part of it all. Alexandra had the most elegant gown, designed by Phillipa Lepley. She also had stunning vintage jewellery and an antique watch.
The other fun thing at this wedding for us was that Alexandra and her parents are Dutch, as were many of the guests. Although we do usually enjoy having our private language, it’s always pleasant to have a chance to speak your own language with new people and surprise some of the guests that you can have a conversation with them in their own language.
And if the groom, best man and some of the ushers look a bit familiar, you are probably a rugby fan. David Flatman is a professional rugby player for Bath Rugby and has also played for the England national rugby union team (and will hopefully do so again soon!). I, on the other hand, am completely clueless about sports and didn’t realise until the wedding rehearsal, the evening before the wedding, who he was! Oops…

David & Stephanie in San Diego

December 28, 2008 | Filed Under David Perry Films | Leave a Comment

At the reception I overheard Stephanie say, "I don't know why people say weddings are stressful. It's been a perfect day!!"

It truly was a perfect day. David and Stephanie were an absolute delight and I had so much fun hanging out with them. Nathan, Craig and Nick from Nathan Petty Photography were also super great and I hope to be shooting with them again soon.

David and Stephanie were sealed in the San Diego temple and then we hit the beach in Carlsbad not too far from their reception site. They wanted an epic feel to their film and for the reception I put together a few minutes from the day to show at the reception. Tell me what you think!

Where we are. Where we’re going.

December 27, 2008 | Filed Under HumanStory Wedding Day Films | Leave a Comment

Happy New Year everyone!

This seems like a good time to take a look at where we are and where we are headed. Here is my attempt at doing that.

In 2008, we saw many exciting changes in wedding film industry. New storytelling styles, quality that is comparable to bigger budget feature films. We also saw the rise of name brand filmmakers like Cloud Nine Creative, Mason Jar Films, Still Motion, Bliss, Velvetine Productions, Elysium, Glen Elliott, and Chris Watson. Way too many more to mention. Check out WEDfact.tv to see some great examples of cutting edge filmmakers. I am also going to keep a section on my blog of filmmakers whose work I admire.

In the rest of the wedding industry, we have seen some really wonderful wedding blogs by some creative and dedicated writers. Some of my favorites were The Brides Cafe, Ritzy Bee, Snippet & Ink, Wedding Bee, and Style Me Pretty. These blogs have proven to be great resources to new brides and grooms.

In 2008, at humanstory we were fortunate to take part in some really amazing events and to help tell some wonderful stories for couples and their families.
In addition, I was able to work with some of my favorite wedding vendors and a lot of great new ones too.

What can we expect from humanstory in 2009?

First, I hope to tell more great stories this year. Judging by the conversations I have had with my new clients and potential clients, it's going to be a great year for wedding and family stories.

Additionally, I am hoping I make humanstory a little greener. I am looking for ways to reduce materials used in marketing, production and post production. I am also looking at ways to use recycled packaging for DVDs and marketing materials. For production I will begin using tapeless formats and LED lighting. It may not amount to too much but I will do what I can in my little corner of the world.   I have to also mention that I was, in part, inspired by Jennifer at Earth Friendly Weddings.

I am going to re-dedicate myself to discovering what is truly important about wedding video to my clients. To create products that is so valuable that they become family heirlooms.
I would like to be a voice in my industry that promotes not only my opinion but also what brides feel is important about wedding film. There are many others in the industry making the same efforts; like my fellow filmmakers, photographers, event planners and wedding bloggers have all played an important role in promoting the importance wedding films. I am so grateful for their efforts.
Along those lines I am going to continue my own education through resources such as Reframe, Wedfact, as well as photography resources and event planning resources.

Wedding video is growing and improving at astonishing rates. I want humanstory to play a role in what I see as a revolution in the industry. In addition to continuing to produce our humanstory wedding and family films, we hope to begin providing support services for videographers and photographers both in production and postproduction. I feel that while we can't be all things to all people, we do have a unique storytelling style that can be combined with the style of other filmmakers in new and compelling ways. Specifically, we are going to focus on post-production fulfillment in our poetic-documentary style. Watch for more details soon.

I am also very happy to welcome Kathy as an account rep. and Melissa as a marketing consultant. Both are really great people who believe in what we are doing. They have already been so helpful.
I also want to thank all of the wonderful shooters, editors and audio engineers that worked with me this year. Their work has really inspired and motivated me.

On a personal note, I hope to find more balance in my family life in 2009. As many of you know, the demands of a business can easily take its toll on your personal life. Maureen, Sydney and Nicolette have been very understanding. I love them dearly.

Thanks to all the couples, families and wedding industry people that helped to make 2008 a great year for me.

Here is to continued growth and happiness in 2009.

Photos from Europe and Morocco

December 26, 2008 | Filed Under Cloud Nine Creative | Leave a Comment

One of the routines Angela and I like to do after each issue of WedLuxe goes to press is to take a break somewhere out of town. It’s usually fairly intense as we approach the print deadline so it’s nice to get away from it all in order to re-charge.

This year we decided to take a 2-week vacation to Europe and Africa and for a change, I decided to focus (pun intended) on just taking still images of the trip with our Canon DSLR. Although I absolutely love videography, what most people don’t know is that I also love photography. Below are just some of the 1200 pics we took while we were away. :)
