Engagement sessions are among my favorite things to photograph, and after spending some time with Wendy and Hunter in Santa Fe last week I can’t wait to take more photos at their wedding next May. We started the shoot on Canyon Road and the evening light just kept getting better as we continued the session along Guadalupe Street and the Railyard. Here is their slide show.

Kim-Fair Reception: Something Beautiful (and Good)

It's been a while since we've posted a reception dance video. Rather than show long, dragged out video segments of guests dancing (badly), we like to edit the dancing down to a fun, energetic video that captures the essence of the fun. Here's one we did that features Natalie and Greg. We showed you a clip from the opening to their wedding earlier. The title of their wedding movie is "Something Good" (taken from the "Sound of Music" song Greg serenaded Natalie with right before she came down the aisle). The song used in this clip is "Something Beautiful" by the Newsboys. I thought it fit perfectly. Enjoy!

**Please NOTE - This is the 1st video on our blog that is embedded in FULL HD! However, if it loads too slowly on your computer you can click the right of the video window to turn HD off. What a pleasure it was too hang out with Sarah & Derrick all day at their wedding. We got there early to film the craziness and excitement of getting ready. New Bern is such a quaint and beautiful town about 2 hours up the coast from Wilmington, and the Marina where the reception was held was absolutely gorgeous with the sun setting right at dinner. It was the first time we had ever had a wedding where the bride’s father actually led the band all night. It was a good ole time with violins, harmonicas and singing to classic songs. Thanks Sarah & Derrick for choosing us to be a part of your wedding day. Everyone be sure to leave them some comment love!

The Fabulous Eighties relived at Waterton Park Wedding
October 31, 2008 | Filed Under Ever After Videos | Leave a Comment
The day of Sharon and Craig’s wedding was rather wet, as per great British tradition, it just rained pretty much all day long. This however was not going to put a damper on this wedding. Early in the morning I went to film the girls getting ready while Niels went next door where the boys were already in the right party mood! Sharon and Craig’s wedding was going to be a fun one!
Their music choices for their wedding day and video were enough to put you in the right mood: the eighties! As their first dance, they chose Jefferson Starship’s Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now, other music included songs from Dirty Dancing, Madonna and Let’s Hear it for the Boys. Their wedding film may be filled with eighties music but luckily everything else was right up too date, so no poofy sleeves or cumber bands at this wedding! Sharon wore a dazzling sparkly dress, Craig a dashing grey suit with a fuchsia tie while the users wore the same grey suits but with black ties and the bridesmaids had gorgeous black dress with hot pink netting. They all looked stunning! And then there were the flowers: WOW! The flowers were done by a local florist, Passion Flowers, whose work is amazing, we’ve seen their work at several weddings over the years and they have always been very original and creative. This time was no different. The bride’s bouquet was like a piece of art, the bridesmaids’ bouquets were just as beautiful and the reception venue was adorned with striking tall black vases filled with lovely pink flowers and had matching pink bows to match.
The wedding was at Badsworth Church in West Yorkshire and the reception took place at nearby Waterton Park Hotel.

This was an engagement shoot that we filmed with Kevin and Alicia Monahan with Kevin Monahan Photography. What a great couple Andrew and Natalie are. They both were very comfortable in front of the camera, which is always a big plus. We are looking forward to filming their wedding, which will be held at a quaint little place in Zionsville, IN called The Sanctuary. This will be a December wedding and everything including Zionsville Village should look spectacular. Natalie picked the song in this video and I think it fits them quite well.
Second shooting with us on this day was Kyle Brownlee.

Heath and Samara - Engagement Video
October 30, 2008 | Filed Under Shadowplay Photography & Video | Leave a Comment
I’m lucky enough to say that 99% of the time I love my job. In truth, I’m not sure it’s right to call something you enjoy this much a job. Heath and Samara’s engagement shoot is definitely one of those experiences that on so many levels transcends anything remotely ‘job-like’.
Katie has already told the story of how this shoot came about so I’ll be brief. Samara lives in South Australia. Heath lives on the Gold Coast. Separated physically but still connected. Not only are they apart from each other, they’re also planning their wedding at the same time.
In August, Heath and Samara happened to be together on the Gold Coast for two days only. They were happy to travel to Toowoomba for the shoot but Katie and I were itching to try something new. Specifically, Katie wanted a field of long grass. No fields of long grass to be found in our town, and we didn’t know any fields of long grass on the Gold Coast, so Samara and her mum (Leanne) were sent on a mission.
Now, for photographers, letting other people pick your locations is a usually a big no-no ’cause you never know what you’re going to get. Especially when you’re driving two hours to the location and you only have limited time with the couple. As a result, we were in two minds as to what to do.
Katie and I had a discussion that boiled down to “Do we play it safe? Or do we take a risk?” Something that helped us make the decision was a blog post by Chase Jarvis that I’d read a few days earlier. You can read it in full here.
His post finished with this line, “If ever given the chance to go or not to go, for the sake of making art, you should always go.”
Go we did. Amazing locations, amazing light, gorgeous couple with a soulful and palpable connection. It’s the stuff of which dreams, not jobs, are made.

Not all weddings we shoot have pretty fireworks, golden sunsets and insect releases.
But what is present in ALL weddings we shoot is the undeniable love and commitment exchanged.

Another Saturday, another fun loving couple. It's a tough life. I know.
Alexis and Andy have been together since their days at SMU. Last Saturday, they decided to make it official at Marie Gabrielle on a picture picture afternoon.
Making those perfect pictures was Andrea Polito, with whom I've had the opportunity on a number of occasions in the past year. Andrea did double duty as a bridesmaid, too!
When I found out that Alexis and Andy had chosen one of my favorite wedding film tunes for their first dance ("Arms of a Woman" by Amos Lee), I knew that we had quite the soul connection.
Skyrocket from Austin put on a show (as they always do). I cannot say enough about Skyrocket, having witnessed their ability to get the party started on numerous occasions. They are they only band that I've seen that covers all your favorite Solid Gold Hits, including Hot Child in the City by Nick Glider. That's right, folks.
Alexis and Andy, thanks for inviting us to the party!

We are finally settled into your new studio. It is so nice having more room and not bumping into each other. We even have a client meeting area with a few new pieces of furniture and some lamps to make it feel more like home.
This is the entrance to our building and Danita's desk where she greets our clients during regular business hours.

Another shot of the entrance of our building.
This is the conference room. We love the up lit table.

Heath and Samara - Engagement Shoot - Part 2
October 30, 2008 | Filed Under Shadowplay Photography & Video | Leave a Comment
So, you’ve waited and now you’re back to see the second half of Heath and Samara’s engagement shoot… it was worth the wait!
The second location of Heath and Samara’s shoot was beautiful Stradbroke Island. Samara’s brother suggested the location, and it was amazing!
After the long grass, we jumped in the car and drove to Samara’s parent’s house, jumped on the family boat and cruised over to ‘Straddie’. We hadn’t see the location before we arrived, it had just been described to us as a ‘cool forest of dead white trees on a secluded beach’… Oh my goodness! It was unreal!
A big thank you to Heath and Samara - for being such a gorgeous couple! I soooo can’t wait to shoot your wedding in December! Also, thanks to Samara’s mum for location scouting and finding the grass field I so badly wanted! And to Roger, for his suggestion of this beautiful beach location (and for captaining the boat that got us there).
Matt has done up a video from this shoot and it’s incredible - we will be posting it very very soon!

I love this location! -

What an awesome couple!!! We had such a blast filming their big day. The filming process was a true example of how educating your wedding party about videography makes for exciting video. Everyone was very comfortable with having us there which lead to some exciting facial expressions and shout outs to the camera. Chandra and David are a Wedding Videographers dream couple. We have had several videographers tell us they wish all of their Brides and Grooms were that fun and exciting to film. When we heard this we just smiled cause little do they know that United Wedding Productions gets all the fun and exciting couples. So a big shout out goes to Chandra and David for sharing their excitement for video with us and everyone at their wedding.

I am so excited to share the film that we produced for Gump's. This was a fabulous runway fashion show of amazing lampshades designed by artists, celebrities and designers. As a lover of fashion, I've always enjoyed shooting models on Black and White 16mm film. It just has a wonderful texture, especially for a behind-the-scenes feel. Not only was this so much fun for us to shoot and edit, but as an art school graduate I love that the money went to a great cause - a scholarship fund for California College of the Arts (CCA). Enjoy!

16mm and 8mm at Kelsey Nixon’s Wedding
October 29, 2008 | Filed Under David Perry Films | Leave a Comment

Kelsey Nixon said she wanted her wedding shot on actual film and so this is what we came up with. 16mm in B&W and color and 8mm in color. Everything you see here is actual film! So much fun and extremely unique. How many people do you know that actually have a wedding film?!
Sure, we can shoot on video and make it look like film, but there is nothing like real film and it adds this whole new dimension to making your day timeless.
We processed the film in California and then had it transfered to video in PA. After a few months of our film traveling the country we were able to put this all together and it has been such a blast.
I'll post her reception soon as well.
Re:Post from Sparkliatti:: Feed Me
October 29, 2008 | Filed Under Bliss* Video Productions | Leave a Comment
This is a brilliant post from our dear friend Sasha at Sparkliatti. Enjoy!
Today we introduce a new segment -- the "Sparkliatti Lesson" These lessons are geared mainly for brides but hopefully other vendors will gleen a little bit out of it as well. One reason why I selected Feeding Your Vendors as the first "Lesson" is that it's something that you can easily put into production when you're figuring out your budget.
The first lesson is on feeding your vendors. It's unfortunate, but my contract spells out the kind of meals that we are fed at weddings -- even if I'm the one organizing the menu and calling in your final counts. I cannot stress to you enough that if you do not think about your vendor meals, the vendors will be in a hurry to go home and stop & McDonald's on the way. In other words, a well fed vendor is a happy vendor.
Some things to remember:
1. Vendors working four consecutive hours or more are served a HOT MEAL. Most vendor meals are 50% of the guest meal cost.
2. Vendors should always be seated within earshot of the wedding festivities or they could miss the toasts, cake cutting or anything else spontaneously happening that is either moved up or not on the timeline.
3. Vendors should NEVER sit at tables in the room with the guests. Why? Because it's just tacky. That's right, I said it.
4. Vendors should NEVER go through the buffet line with the guests. Once again...tacky. It's not that hard for the caterer to put some of the buffet into disposible containers and deliver it buffet style to the vendor area.
5. If you have a band that needs to be fed - serve them separately before the other vendors. for a few reasons: a) they notoriously eat all the food and leave a huge mess of nothing for all the other vendors & b) if you feed them first, their breaks will be shorter later.
Don't even get me started on the fact that I was once served a moldy sandwich at a very well known wedding venue in San Francisco.
Now, let me explain how this works. You've asked to add vendor meals to your banquet order or menu pricing and the caterer or site has given you a cost. What you need to know now is...is that a hot meal? Buffet? Or is it a box lunch with a soggy sandwich, chips and apple juice? Please ask and use this rule of thumb: Whether it's a buffet of lasagne, salad, bread and cookies or a seated meal of chicken, salad and potatoes. Does not matter, usuallly, to the vendors.
Also and MOST IMPORTANTLY the vendors need to eat at the same time or before the guests. Do you want your photographer noshing while you're supposed to do your first dance? Then why is it so difficult for caterers to understand that it's in the client's best interest to feed us all early? It all cooks at the same time, so what the heck? I don't understand it but Brides - stand up and make a point to tell the caterer that this is NECESSARY no matter how much they try to convince you that it's not necessary or it's "not how they normally do it". What.ever.
When seating your vendors, it's typical that there is a kitchen area or a room within earshot where teh vendors can toss their items down, plug in their battery packs for the photographer & video and have a meal. Not all vendors dine at the same time so it's a great idea to have a buffet for them and as stated above PLEASE feed the band separately. As much as we "love" the band -- nothing is more irritating to a vendor than a needy band who just showed up an hour ago and wants their food and we've been there for 10 hours doing hard labor and had a Diet Coke and some stale crackers from the trunk of our car.
Just remember, while it may cost you a few extra bucks, a happy, well fed vendor is more willing to work harder, longer and be less irritable. In the long run, it makes you the best bride ever!
Food for thought....when was the last time you worked 8 hours straight WITHOUT a break?
