Road Trip: Part 2
September 30, 2008 | Filed Under Vanessa McKellar Productions | Leave a Comment
(Part 1)After Perdidi Key we headed to Orlando and the beautiful Marriot Grand Lakes Resort for the Wedding and Event Videographers Association's annual Expo. We spent the next four days getting up early (well, earlier than we're used to) to attend various sessions put on by industry leaders. Some of the sessions we attended: The Tools of Documentary Storytelling, Weva Live!: Ceremony (where they have a real bride and groom to demonstrate techniques with), Top 10 Editing Tips, Finding a Movie in Every Person, and more. Some were good, some not so great. I actually wish I had gone in my first year or two of business.
We also cruised around the Trade Show Floor where we learned about new products and such. I tested out this glidecam vest. Would you like me showing up at your wedding looking like Robo-Videographer?
With barely any time to relax in the hotel's lazy river, we had to scoot off to St. Augustine. Our friends love this city (it's the oldest one in the States!) so we had to give it a try. Unfortunately, we didn't give ourselves enough time here so we slept away some valuable sight-seeing time. But we did enjoy ourselves. This place is certainly worth checking out if you're going to be in Florida.
top: Where we ate dinner the first night. Nice view, eh?
left: The little cottage we rented, which was in the shadow of...
right: The Lighthouse! This is where Brent learned that I am afraid of heights.
We also got to eat caramel apples, roam the old timey shop area, watch a wedding getaway, explore a fort made of bits of shell, and pour over antique books for half an afternoon in a used book store. After two nights here it was back on the road to good ol' T-Town. Certainly not a relaxing vacation (more of a trip, really), but we're glad we did it. We now have plans to spend a month in one location overseas. On my list of options: Scotland, New Zealand, or Croatia.

Harker’s Island, NC
Couldn’t have asked for a better summer day on the coast. We spent the weekend at Harker’s Island, NC for this gorgeous wedding. The ceremony and reception took place on a family owned peninsula, and as you can see in the footage, the sun dropped right over the water at sunset. We included some 8mm film look in the video to show off the elegant and timeless “Southern” flare we all felt the entire day. Millie and Willis really knew how to throw a party, additionally impressive because of the 650+ people attending! The highlight of the evening for everyone was the extravagant fireworks display that definitely rivaled any big city’s show during the 4th of July. You’ll have to watch the video to see it! We thoroughly enjoyed working with Dara Blakeley and her photography team out of Raleigh. And the entertainment was one of the best bands we have heard in our career as videographers. Gentlemen and Their Lady. Check ‘em out.
Thanks Millie and Willis for allowing us to be part of your day. We hope you enjoy. And people, let’s leave some comments to let them know you like the video too!

I don’t often post on the blog, but I’m so excited that I had to say something.
Matt and I are always looking for ways to improve and trying new ideas and concepts to keep our work fresh and exciting. Matt, especially, keeps up with other videographers, trends, and news in the wedding video industry. One of our favorites and recently voted one of the top 25 in the world, StillMotion (stillmotion.ca) is holding a cinemotography workshop early next year and Matt is getting the opportunity to attend! Come January, Matt heads to Toronto to attend the 3 day workshop. We are both so excited that he gets the chance to work with some of the best in the world! It will be a great learning experience and I know he is so looking forward to it. It will be a great start to a new year which will inevitably lead to some very cool things to come in the future!

Gwen & Erwin had an awesome wedding up in San Francisco. The day started out with a beautiful ceremony at the gorgeous St. Peter & Paul Church. Next came the reception at the super unique Bently Reserve. We just don't get that kind of architecture here in the OC! Everything was fabulous. Gwen & Erwin were so fun and so was their wedding party! Alex had a blast trooping around downtown San Francisco with photographer Sherman Chu. They got some amazing shots!! Grace Lee helped coordinate all the details in order to make the event unforgettable. Congratulations guys! Check out their Arthouse Edit:Cheska Garcia and Doug Kramer

What a sweet couple these two are! When I delivered their finished DVD's, they invited me to lunch so we got to rehash all the fun details of their wedding. And what a fun wedding it was. With a sweetly nervous bride, fumbled vows, crazy groomsmen, an unruly veil, cake smashing, lotsa limbo, and a "missing ring", it was a day to remember. It was also fun for me to catch up with Robert and Raquel, the sister of the groom. Chase and Jessika are so close to their families, and it's a pleasure to be a part of it all. Nikole and James wedding was unlike any other wedding Casey and I have shot. We had 1 hour before the wedding and 1 hour after the wedding with just them! We were able to be creative and go to several different locations to get photos of them together. Nikole & James have been dating since highschool so they are so comfortable around each other, that they make our job a breeze. In addition, their family was so much fun to be around and there were tears of joy flowing throughout the day. N & J- Have a blast in Cancun, we can’t wait to see all those pictures when you get back ![]()

On June 29, 2008, the Parish of St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Community hosted a "A Jubilee Celebration" in honor of their 25th Anniversary. Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, presiding Archbishop of Galvestion-Houston was there for the special mass and BBQ lunch, which was prepared by the local Knights of Columbus. This video highlight commemorates this very special day for the Parish of St. Maximilian Kolbe and their focus on the theme "Building on Christ's Foundation for 25 Years."

This was a Same Day Edit (SDE) we produced for Scott and Jessica on Saturday. The wedding was at the beautiful Trinity United Methodist Church in Lafayette, IN.
We enjoyed working with Scott and Jessica and they both have a great personality and this was quite evident when we shot their engagement video (link below). We first met the couple when they visited our studio in Noblesville and when they left, we knew they would be fun.
For those not familiar with a Same Day Edit, we take the footage obtained during the day and produce a short video highlight of the days events. These command organization skills and the ability to stay on task under lots of pressure. The reward, however, is priceless in watching the reaction of the couple as we help them relive the days events and to see things they were not able to see.
We have a scheduled SDE coming up in October at Notre Dame.

Alex and Kelly met and fell in love at the college of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. It just made sense that it would be the place that they would pick for their wedding. I had such a great weekend in Williamsburg with Alex and Kelly and their families and friends. Thanks so much guys for asking me to be there to film the wedding day for you.
Thanks also to Colleen Cook of CC's Events. Colleen really worked so hard to help make the event special for Kelly and Alex. It really showed and the outcome was absolutely incredible.
I also go the chance to work with Pete and Liliana Wright of PW Photography. They were a pleasure to work with and their photos are amazing.
Thanks Alex and Kelly. Take care.

Be Careful at the Mandarin Hotel Parking Lot
September 28, 2008 | Filed Under Jason Magbanua | Wedding Videographer | Leave a Comment
It’s a common thing to say to oneself - “Nah, it will not happen to me.” But eventually, it will, whatever it is.
Last Friday, September 26th, we were shooting a wedding in Mandarin Hotel. It was around reception time and we were parked from between 9pm to 12mn at the lot directly in front of the hotel. It was an evening wedding in Santuario San Antonio hence the late time.
My SUV got broken into. The rear window, where the spare tire is, was completely ripped off. Equipment got stolen and the sense of violation sucks.
It only goes to show that bad luck and man’s ill intent can and will strike anytime, anywhere. Even if it’s in the grounds of a five star hotel.
What can one do? Nothing apparently, because - “The vehicle owners expressly agree that the hotel shall not be liable for any damage to or loss of the vehicle and/or its contents. “ Sucks to be me right now.
But now you know, don’t leave anything valuable behind WHEREVER you are parking. And Mandarin, I’m “kinda” glad it’s the first incident of its kind (according to your security), but I sure do hope it won’t happen again.

Trashin’ in Times Square
September 26, 2008 | Filed Under StillMotion | Leave a Comment
When Frances first called and said she wanted us to come all the way to NY to do a TTD with her, we were very flattered. When she then said she wanted to go from Coney Island to Times Square, we got sooo excited about the shoot. This is our first TTD where the couple, Frances and James, were married quite some time ago.
At the start they seemed to be a little apprehensive as to exactly what John was going to ask them to do. As the day went on and they started settling into our antics, we kept getting larger and larger crowds wherever we went. From the moment we walked into Times Square, their must have been a good dozen camera shooting us and the couple at all times and much larger crowds formed wherever we stopped.
It was an adventurous day to say the least.

Photo Note:
NYC was nuts! It was really neat to do a TTD there. Being my first time in New York, knowing little old me was doing a TTD in Time Square on my own was quite intimidating. Sometimes I’d be shooting and I’d just get extremely overwhelmed by the sheer number of ideas that I had. Not to mention I got somewhat claustrophobic with the hundreds of people standing watching me shoot, crazy. Hope you enjoy the Photographs, I had a lot of fun creating them!

Jessica and Eric had a fun wedding that was full of creative ideas. I love how Jessica let her bridesmaids pick their own green dress, and I also loved her natural and unique green flower arrangements. She and Eric are super sweet and playful with each other and it was fun to watch them interact on their big day. A Hometown Trash The Dress - Julia + Phil
September 26, 2008 | Filed Under StillMotion | Leave a Comment
After an insanely busy 2 months, the Still-Motion team has finally reunited and come back home. We’ve been busy shooting weddings and TTD sessions across Canada and the US.
With that being said, how lucky of us to have a TTD session with Julia & Phil, in our home-town of Toronto! (that’s in Ontario, for all our international fans out there).
Now we’ve had the great fortune of working with brides unafraid to get their dresses wet, but judging from this clip: I think everyone would agree hands-down that Julia has shown us all how it’s done.
Have fun watching …
- Michael
ps. be sure to check back for the next 2 upcoming TTD clips; one from Vancouver (Canada), and the other coming straight from the big apple, New York City (U.S & A.!… U.S & A.!)!!

Congratulations Nicole & Anthony

Congratulations to Nicole and Anthony, who were married on Sunday 21st September 2008 at St John’s Melkite Church in Greenacre.

Their day started with the traditional Middle-Eastern celebrations in the morning and continued all the way to the Church.

Nicole’s father become very emotional as he handed his daughter over to Anthony waiting at the altar and said with tears in his eyes; “She’s yours… take good care of her.” Moments like these simply cannot be captured with still photography, only the presence of a professional & dedicated video & audio team can do this properly.

After a beautiful wedding ceremony and a powerful sermon given by the local Deacon, we then headed off to Observatory Hill and Circular Quay and shot some great footage of the bridal party having fun.

The celebrations then continued at the Skyview Reception, where the whole room erupted into loud cheers and dancing as soon as Nicole & Anthony made their big entrance.

Later in the evening the room erupted into laughter & more cheering as we screened the couple’s Pre-Wedding Story (a humorous re-enactment of their courtship which we filmed in August.)
During the formalities, Nicole’s father gave one of the most emotional & heartfelt speeches we’d heard in quite some time. Evro & I would like to wish Nicole & Anthony a fantastic honeymoon in Phuket and hope the bring back some great photos & video for their Honeymoon montage!

Congratulations to Joyce & Edwin who were married on Saturday 20th September 2008. Their wedding ceremony was held at St Martin’s Anglican Church in Killara.
A Romantic Wedding Day
To preview their On-Line Wedding Day Highlight please click on the above photo.
Joyce’s father was overwhelmed with joy as he walked his beautiful daughter down the aisle with the love and emotion oh so evident on Edwin’s face as he watched his bride walk towards him. Even though Reverend Martin was quite strict with our movement during the ceremony we were able to capture some amazing footage and very clear audio thanks to the two wireless microphones we used between the Groom & Reverend Martin (have a look at the On-Line Highlight.)

Historical Curzon Hall was the location for the lunch time celebrations held for a select group of friends and immediate family.
We then headed out to St Mary’s Cathedral and Pier 9 to shoot some amazing Glidecam footage with the Bridal Party. Evro’s goal is to sustain longer shots with the Glidecam rather than the typical 2-3 seconds most people are showing. He believes that it makes for better continuity & allows the viewer’s mind to really get comfortable and folow the story - I personally think that too many different images of short duration tend to be a bit distracting. Have a look at the On-Line Highlight and tell us what you think - do you like fast changing shots or slower more flowing ones?

A traditional Tea Ceremony was held at the Imperial Peking Restaurant at the Rocks, followed by a delicious multi-course Chinese banquet. Speeches from the Bride & Groom’s Fathers were very emotional and heart felt, furthermore you could hear a pin drop - now that’s what I call respect!

It was truly a privilege and an honour to have been a part of such an elegant and romantic wedding day. Both Evro and I would like to thank Joyce & Edwin for their phenomenal hospitality & attention to detail ensuring we were looked after for the whole day from our seating arrangements to giving us complete control over venue lighting & sound. We were incredibly humbled when during his speech, Edwin made it known to all present that he actually changed their original wedding date in order to secure our filming services. It’s so rewarding to have a bride & groom recognise & appreciate the hard work we put into our craft; we certainly will go the extra mile to give them something very special.
