Boy and Shalene’s 40th Anniversary

July 30, 2008 | Filed Under Jason Magbanua | Wedding Videographer | Leave a Comment

You know how us wedding suppliers always say how sweet, awesome and moving the weddings we do are?  Definitely not exaggerations but it takes events like the one we did last Sunday to remind us,  the couple and everybody else that there’s a long hard (yet sweet) road ahead.

Mr. and Mrs. Boy Dizon’s 40th Anniversary from Jason Magbanua on Vimeo.

Anniversaries are waaaay more awesome and inspiring.  The couples have been there and they have done that.  They have fulfilled their vows (on weddings they remain word) and have kept true to their promises.

The Dizon’s are a happy bunch.  Well mannered and a joy to work with.  Check out the faberge egg ring holder, if you follow the blog closely, this debuted in Stella and Randy’s wedding last year.  Come Aug 16, you’ll probably see it again because it’s Rodney’s turn.

The magic moment is at 2:41 - pure love!

It was also on the day of the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, presiding Archbishop of Galveston-Houston was there for the special mass and jubilee celebration.

Just as we began, we end with Ian's toast.  Ian had a way of finding the right words for the right time, and you can see how engaged the guests were in the love that poured from his heart.

How fitting a closing, to Alicia Keys' "No One," you just get the feeling that everything's going to be all right as you hear those words and see how tight the families are interwoven with love.

I'm high.

In the future - final thoughts and some photos from Stephen Karlisch.

FEVER!!!

July 30, 2008 | Filed Under GENERATIONS videostories | Leave a Comment

Clearly I'm playing catch up here.
I know I haven't written about Christine and Alex yet...
Even though their wedding was long ago in February '08, since we're just now finishing up their wedding film, it's still happening for us.

(We do live in something of a time warp: We're booking weddings for Summer/Fall '09; filming weddings for Summer 'o8; and finishing editing weddings from early Winter '08. Nothing like living in the past. present and future all at the same time!!)

Christine and Alex were the best: Young, fun, playful, creative with a bit of retro drama thrown in. Alex, who is very tall, dark and lean, wore 1940's formal wear. Christine, who is tiny and blond, wore a 1950's influenced bridal gown complete with fur shrug. They continued the retro theme in their first dance, the Peggy Lee classic, FEVER, and their sexy dance really heated up the dance floor.
They chose to have one of their good friends officiate at the simple but sweet ceremony and once the party started, the dance floor was full all night.

I had a lot of fun filming Christine and her girls getting their hair done at a salon earlier in the day. The ambience of the salon added the perfect touch for the transformation from casual to glamorous.
Brittany Blando and her assistant Maureen from BKB photography were the photographers and we always have a great time working alongside them.

Picture 1

This weekend, I will be among the redwoods, waterfalls, and cottages shooting a wedding of a friend in Nestldown and then another wedding for her company at the Ritz Carlton San Francisco.  I will be shooting with the fabulous team of Julie and Alex Hill of Elysium and alongside Modern Bride Trendsetter  photographer Elizabeth Messina.  Expect some pretty amazing imagery on down the line!

High temps will be 20-40 degress less than what I'm getting in Texas right now.  I might not come back.

It's a tough life, but somebody's got to live it.

I Have the Coolest Job.

July 29, 2008 | Filed Under Artifact Documentaries | Leave a Comment

So, I was just sitting here editing Judie and Frank's super8 wedding film and I realized just how cool my job is. Not only do I get to edit to super cool music and constantly be introduced to new music, but I have the pleasure of getting to know people and places. Filming things that I wouldn't otherwise get to film. And editing to this gorgeous medium that I have to admit has found a soft spot in my heart. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE video and it certainly has its place... but super8... I just can't get over it.

But the best part about my job... and yes, this is probably going to sound totally corny, but I don't know how else to put it... is that I/we get to create artifacts of people's lives. That we're creating an object that will tell a story about their children's children's ancestors.... And knowing that I've poured my heart and soul (and yes, Jeff and I do get into arguments about shots and sequences) into these gives me so much satisfaction... that well, it leads me to believe that I just might have the coolest job. Ever.

...I'm gonna go edit me some super8 now. :)

Marina and Brad: A Super8 Opening

July 29, 2008 | Filed Under Artifact Documentaries | Leave a Comment

Ah the loveliness of Super8 film. I can't get enough of it. And I usually get busted by the hubs for shooting too much of it. It's just so darn timeless and certainly will never go out of style in my opinion. Obviously, the "film look" has become very popular in wedding videos now, but the "film look" shot on video and manipulated in post-production just doesn't come close to the real thing. I think when you're shooting with a Super8 camera you tend to shoot differently. Not only do you have to choose your shots more wisely (because it's so bloody expensive), but there's a different kind of spontaneity and natural beauty that can be captured on film. It just has such a nostalgic and atmospheric vibe that is so very difficult to duplicate on video. Below is the opening sequence of Marina and Brad's lovely wedding in Shrewsbury, NJ shot on the "real thing". Song: "Such Great Heights" by Iron & Wine.

Style Me Pretty

July 29, 2008 | Filed Under Northernlight Filmworks | Leave a Comment

Several weeks ago we received a call from Style me Pretty, which we were familiar with and am a frequent visitor to their site. They apparently had been visiting our site as well and called to tell us how much they liked our work and wanted us to be one of their preferred vendors. As a business we get many companies wanting us to advertise with them and some are better than others. Style me Pretty, however, got our attention because we loved the content on their site first and foremost. As we talked, they explained that we would need to submit a full wedding film to further evaluate our work. As we talked a bit more, they discussed with us how they only want the best of the best.

We submitted some samples of our work, some recent work and some older work. We received a call yesterday informing us that they were very impressed with the work we do and we were formally invited to be a part of the section of their site called "Little Black Book". We will be listed under Cinematography and the Indiana section will be launched July 31st, 2008. We are familiar with some of our collegues nationwide and can tell you, they are some of the very best in the world.

We are thrilled to be a part of Style Me Pretty. Spend some time and check out the site, there is some really cool and chic stuff there.

Flower Fantasies

July 28, 2008 | Filed Under Vanessa McKellar Productions | Leave a Comment

I just saw these flower photos on another blog and I wanted to repost them. They're by Daniel Ost, and I've never seen such lavish, over-the-top, fantastic floral designs.

I mean, is this even real?

Look at the scale of this one. That's a huge room and I can't even begin to guess how many strands they suspended. And of course, the lighting design really helps too.

Are you kidding me? How many flowers do you think they used here?

This one reminds me of something Emporer Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Majal, would have created for his beloved wife. I think it's actually a rather simple concept, but the flawless execution and huge scale make it astounding.

By the way, if any of you readers are having Daniel do your flowers, I'll cut you a deal on your videography. ;)

Owen: The Arrival

July 28, 2008 | Filed Under Artifact Documentaries | Leave a Comment

This was the very first "Owen movie" we made and it still melts my heart each time I watch it. Ok, I admit it... I'm a little bit biased... after all he's mine/ours. He's almost terribly 3 now... so it's nice to see him before he could talk back. And yes, one of these days I will get around to posting some wedding videos, but this one is just too darn sweet, I couldn't resist. And no, he's not all terrible, so he's not up for grabs. I don't particularly care to be on the other side of the lens.. so if you could just blip me out of your memory that would be great. Song: "Theme From Blinking Lights" by Eels.

Our Birth of the Modern Wedding Video

July 28, 2008 | Filed Under Artifact Documentaries | Leave a Comment

When my husband, Jeff, and I were married in August of 2003 we opted not to have a wedding video. Myself with a degree in photography and my hubby a professional cameraman for the better part of his adult career just couldn't bear to have our day recorded in a 3 hour cheesy epic rendition of "Our Wedding Day". We've all seen them at one time or another; hearts, twinkling stars... ok, maybe that was back in the 80's and early 90's. Regardless, we opted out of having our day recorded on video because we figured wedding videography still had such a bad reputation for cheese. Boy, do I regret not having that video (mostly to have the raw footage to edit it myself)!

After we were married, we did the whole house, dog, kid thing and after realizing that mortgages, dog and kid cost lots of money, Jeff decided that he might start shooting weddings to make some extra cash. Being in the profession for 15 years he'd figured shooting weddings would be a piece of cake. He'd farm out the editing, but then I mentioned that I could probably do the editing. After all I took a video class in Detroit while attending art school. This was all an experiment in essence and we were totally clueless as to the insane wedding industry we were about to find ourselves a part of.

So we lured a friend who was getting married into letting us shoot her wedding for the cost of tapestock and 1 roll of Super8 film. To be honest, when we first had notions of shooting weddings, we figured we'd do a nice job; professional, high-quality - but simply edited, much like you see in today's videos. Mostly super slo-mo and dissolves... nicely done, but lacking in story and set almost entirely to music, mainly just showing the events of the day. So When I sat down to start editing our first wedding, I quickly realized that we had a style to offer that was different from the norm. It's about telling a compelling and real story about the couple, their families and one of the most important days of their lives. In essence, a highly-edited documentary wedding film that feels like a movie. Something where the entirety of the piece constitutes "the good parts", so fast-forwarding is not required.

The next wedding we shot, we incorporated formal interviews with the newlyweds into the documentary. Jackpot! We had found our niche. It turned out beautifully. The interviews formed the backbone of Rob and Lesley's wedding story and were woven into the documentary to tell the history of their relationship and proposal and thoughts of the wedding day itself.

So with that Artifact Documentaries was born. A boutique wedding documentary company that will always and forever remain small and intimate. Each film crafted by hand for each couple. Shot on Super8 film and digital video. No set templates, no set song list, no cheesy special effects; just plain old fashioned editing done thoughtfully and beautifully for each film we produce.

5 Things you should definitely do before, during and after your wedding.

July 28, 2008 | Filed Under Artifact Documentaries | Leave a Comment

1. Treat yourselves to a massage a day or two before the wedding. A real one. Not the kind where you have to give one back in return. We were living in Brooklyn at the time... and I remember walking up to the little spa on Court St.... hand in hand... with that buzz of knowing the wedding was so close and all our friends were coming into town...

2. VERY IMPORTANT. Hire a day-of wedding coordinator. We didn't and regret it. Things are so chaotic that day, that if there are a few less things you have to worry about... then it's worth it. Jeff was running around like crazy trying to make things perfect and wasn't able to enjoy himself as much as he should have... and I always regret that.

3. Hire a videographer. We didn't and regret this, too. (At least I do, Jeff might disagree on that one). You might think I'm biased... but really.... I truly wish I had that video.

4. Before you leave on your honeymoon.... Gather as many friends as you can and go tubing down a nearby river the day after your wedding. We did this on a picturesque river in the Hudson Valley as we were painfully pelted by a downpour of the heaviest rains I've ever seen. It was the most (non)fun I've ever had. Not recommended in all areas.

5. Allow yourself to have fun! Enjoy every second of it because when it's over you'll want to do it again... Trust me.

Claire & Lance’s Same Day Edit at Estancia

July 28, 2008 | Filed Under Elysium Productions | Leave a Comment

Whoa... two blog posts in one day? Crazy!! I was really looking forward to shooting this wedding and was not disappointed! First of all, I have to say that the Estancia Hotel & Spa in La Jolla is one of my new favorite venues. It's absolutely stunning and a gorgeous setting for an outdoor ceremony. The bride was radiant of course - I loved her dress and of course the groom looked super handsome in his formal uniform. Sunny from White Lilac was there with her team again (I wonder if she slept LOL!) to create the beautiful floral design. Brooke from Details Details coordinated the event, which of course, went off without a hitch. She and her team were so awesome! Of course the day would not be complete without a little Delesie flair... Aaron Delesie of course who I thought was going to pass out from excitement from being able to shoot at such an amazing venue with such an amazing couple! Congratulations Claire & Lance!

Gail & Nemo’s Same Day Edit from the Hyatt HB

July 28, 2008 | Filed Under Elysium Productions | Leave a Comment

Gail & Nemo currently live in New York (so jealous) but held their wedding at the Hyatt Huntington Beach on Friday. The ceremony was really touching and was officiated by our favorite JP Reynolds (along with three Buddhist Munks!) Michelle & her team from Details Details did a fabulous job as always coordinating the flawless event. Sunny from White Lilac was there to provide the stunning decor and to make sure everything was just the right shade of pink & lavender. The whole room was draped in this color and it was literally stunning! The crew at TripleCord took the photos and you'll have to stay tuned to their blog because I'm sure they will be posted soon!! Congratulations Gail & Nemo!!
