Cali {heart} Nick Jonas and his brothers!

September 3, 2010 | Filed Under Studio 67 | Leave a Comment

Back on February 5th of this year we were completely blind-sided when doctors told us that our youngest child, Cali, had Type 1 Diabetes.  She is just 6 years old and until a few weeks before this she was very healthy.  We also learned during her admission and 3 week stay at McMaster Children's Hospital that she has a heart condition and it's been quite a medical and emotional journey for us this past 6 months.  The support from the Diabetic Team at McMaster has been incredibly helpful, informative and uplifting.  Heather, a Child Life Specialist, has been spending a lot of time with Cali and really focusses on making her feel like Diabetes isn't such a big deal.  From practicing needle pokes on fabric dolls to games and activities that allow her to express her concerns and feelings we've all been so impressed with how our lives have adjusted to manage this disease.  Last week Heather called to say that on behalf of Bayer, The Jonas Brothers and McMaster Cali was chosen to receive two tickets to the Camp Rock Concert Tour in Toronto last night.  The news made her very excited and we felt this was the perfect time to create a short musical documentary to capture this moment in her life so she'll never forget it.  We know there are copyright issues around using Nick's song "who I am" and recording live concerts, but we wanted to have just a few short clips to tie this piece all together.  We hope the Jonas brothers and their management team understand.

This is for Cali and all other children out there who learn they have Type 1.

What you need to know… About hiring a wedding filmmaker.

September 3, 2010 | Filed Under Diva Productions Cinematography | Leave a Comment

I write a regular column for Gulf Coast Bride called “What you need to know...” “What you need to know…” gives you an insider’s look at the wedding industry and advice on how to get the most out of your wedding day. In this issue it got personal. It's all about wedding filmmaking and the various options which are available to couples when they're looking for a filmmaker to document their big day. I've said it before, but I'll say it again, the most important thing you can do before hiring any vendor you are considering for this service is to review a fully edited wedding film. Many editors can pull together a good three-minute highlight reel, but it takes a storyteller to sustain that energy through an entire wedding film. Check out my article below to see what else you need to know about wedding films before you book:

(click on the images to enlarge)

P.S. - When I sent the photo of me with the Super 8 camera to the magazine, it was meant to accompany the small blurb about me at the end of the article. You know, something little... a photo of the author... Jeez Louise! I never expected to get a whole page! I would have written more - there's still so much to talk about DSLR filming, Super 8, equipment, editing techniques, etc., etc., etc...

P.P.S - How HOT is our new ad???!!!

Ali and Richard: A Preview.

September 3, 2010 | Filed Under Advanced Video Solutions | Leave a Comment

A quick excerpt from a conversation with my wife a few weeks back-

Lisa: Was that the mother of the bride you were on the phone with?
Me: Yeah.
Lisa: Wow. You were on there for a loooong time!
Me: Yes we were.
Lisa: You two must have really hit it off!
Me: Yes...yes we did.

Put simply, I was smitten with Ms. Pam (MOB) the moment I spoke to her and couldn't wait to meet the friends and families she had surrounded herself with. They didn't disappoint :-)! Ali and Rich, thanks so much for sharing your day with us! It was a joy and honor that we'll carry for a long time to come.

Technology never ceases to amaze. Ali's sister, Ashlie, had a baby just days before the ceremony and was unable to attend in person, but thanks to a laptop, wi-fi, and skype she was able to see and hear everything from the ceremony to the reception in the comfort of her own home.

NOTABLES
The rehearsal dinner was held at the Oxford Conference Center and I was so impressed at how warm and helpful the staff was (ask for Hayden or Micah). Butch and his crew from Taylor Grocery Catering made sure everyone was fed in fine style (I've been known to eat my body weight in his fried catfish). I've been following the work of Danny Klimetz from Captured Photography for a while now and have been wanting to shoot with him for the longest time. If you haven't had the pleasure, run, don't walk to his blog right now!

Melissa & Cace Wedding Video | Longview, Texas

September 2, 2010 | Filed Under Vanessa McKellar Productions | Leave a Comment

This is one of those weddings where I kinda don't know where to start, it was just so great. I guess I should start with the bride and groom: these two are awesome. First off- super sweet and willing to try anything. I'd ask Cace to do a little something and he'd cheerfully say, "Yeah, sure! Whatever you want!!" Dream groom for me. And dream groom for Melissa I'm sure. He was so happy he was borderline giddy, especially right after the ceremony when he couldn't stop laughing. It's obvious these two are smitten with each other, and perfect for each other.

For your enjoyment, here is their highlights montage:

Melissa was ravishing in her dress. Oh, the dress. When I saw it, my first reaction was, "I want it!" which is entirely ridiculous. But the texture and glow of the fabric, the poofy flower under the bust, the unique cut, plus the veil and flower in her hair...gorgeous! It was a perfect centerpiece to the "look" of the day- rustic country done with lavish elegance. Passionflower Designs executed the theme and did such an overwhelming job tying it all together. There were so many details; I want to share some of them with you:

- You saw her programs and a favor in my recent video post.

- The altar was decorated with dozens and dozens of candles, so it looked liked fireflies twinkling up there among the flowers during the ceremony.

- There were groupings of paper cut-out birds tied to twine dangling from the reception tent. Plus small round glass vases with single flowers in them. Plus a huge "chandelier" hanging over the dance floor decorated with candles and flowers.

- The cake table was beautiful: a scrolled rusty-metal cake stand, and pretty fabric overlaid with a paper tablecloth with butterfly cut-outs in it, plus silverware in the shape of branches.

- The groom's cake was actually several bundt cakes in the barn, in the same room with the espresso bar and classical guitarists.

- They created a sign post that they put outside that pointed the way to "dancing", "java", "Waco" etc.

- On two walls were strings of photographs of Melissa and Cace and their friends and family.

- Also in the barn there were small tables with lampshades suspended from the ceiling over the floral centerpieces.

- Outside of the tent they created yet another eating area by building a maypole-like structure out of poles and lights, and setting up tables underneath the warm glow.

- The table settings in the tent were amazing: flowers surrounded by ceramic candle holders and votives, green glasses, table numbers made out of branches, wire, and moss, stylish green chargers topped with mini bird's nests filled with aqua Jordan Almonds, and my perhaps my favorite detail: large chilled S. Pellegrino water bottles, with a bottle opener and cork tied to the neck with string. Seriously, can you say "Attention to detail?!?"

I enjoy the aesthetics of weddings and like to share these things with my readers so that they might be inspired for their own event. I know that weddings aren't about the details- it's about celebrating a new life together. It's the memories made: the laughter, rituals, kisses, music and singing, words spoken, the culmination of dreams, and the creation of a happy new family.

And if you still want more, you can watch their feature length film:

And in case you missed it before, you can check out their trailer here.

Melissa said, "WOW! Cace and I were pleasantly surprised to find your package on our doorstep this week. From the amazing packaging to the deleted scenes, we were so impressed with your work. Thank you sooo much for such a gift. As we watched we laughed, we cried (with joy!), and were perfectly reminded of what a special day that was. We have been enjoying married life sooo much. We are so happy to feel like we are constantly falling more in love with one another and your beautiful video added to this even more. THANK YOU! I can't say thank you enough!

It was amazing and we can't wait to show our friends and family! It was so special and you captured every moment. We are so happy and thankful.
God has given you an amazing gift of capturing such special moments in such a creative way. Thank you again for sharing your gift with us.

THANKS AGAIN.. and WOW!

Celebrity Wedding?

September 2, 2010 | Filed Under D'nM Video Productions | Leave a Comment

Tammie commands a pretty striking resemblance to Angelina Jolie, but Tammie and Adam will soon be stars in their own right as cast-members of the upcoming television series ‘Four Weddings’.

Tammie and Adam’s Australiana-themed wedding was quite unique in that we filmed alongside a crew of about 8 who were there to put together an episode for the show that will air on Channel 7 later this month.  You will even catch a few glimpses of Tammie in this  Channel 7 – preview video. Watch the preview … I’m sure you’ll agree with me that they should just give Tammie & Adam the prize now, it’s obvious that their wedding was the best :)

Thanks to Tammie and Adam for allowing us to capture their big day. We had a great time and we wish you luck in the TV-competition and all the best for a wonderful future together!

Photography was by our mate Nathan from WG Photography. The video preview frame is one of Nathan’s photos.

Filmed: Dave, Alex & Ian.  Edited by Ian.

3D Weddings!

September 2, 2010 | Filed Under D'nM Video Productions | Leave a Comment

You can now have your wedding filmed in 3D !

With recent advances in 3D technology, 3D is becoming more readily available to everyone.  Hollywood is producing many more feature films in 3D and now you can also experience your wedding day in 3D.

We have recently completed training in using the brand new Panasonic 3D cameras and we are very excited to add 3D weddings to our range of options. I am happy to report that the quality of these cameras is amazing!

FAQ:

Q: What do you need to be able to watch it?

A: You need 3 things … 1) a 3D Blu-ray player   2) a 3D-capable television  3) 3D glasses.

Q: I’ve heard that 3D can hurt your eyes or damage your brain :)

A: Badly-filmed 3D can certainly ‘hurt your brain’ (give you a headache).  If 3D is filmed well, then it will be much more comfortable to watch.  3D is easier to watch in smaller doses (shorter length pieces).  As for any long-term effects, I personally believe that this is just media-hype.

Please call us for more details.

Tracy and Mark – Wedding Highlights

Tracy and Mark:
RIBA, London

It’s not often you get an enquiry to film a wedding with a ’Sex and the City’ theme…so we made the most of it!  Filming as we paced through busy central London certainly drew a lot of attention – Tracy and her bridal party must have felt like celebrities!

I’ve tried to carry this theme across in the highlights clip, complete with sparkly titles and everything :)

A great wedding Tracy and Mark, you must have been so proud to have pulled it off so successfully!

Richard
Creative Director

p.s. Lovely to meet and work with you, Maria Murray, Segerius Bruce and Lisa (RIBA).
p.p.s. GOOD LUCK with your ‘Must Be The Music’ competition progress, CK Gospel Choir!!

To purchase a copy of this wedding DVD, you can use paypal (which accepts debit/credit cards), but before sending it out we will double-check with the bride and groom that they know you.

Jenn + Mike | In Pictures | Toronto

September 1, 2010 | Filed Under Studio 67 | Leave a Comment

Finally, I'm getting a few of my favourite images posted from Jenn and Mike's August wedding.  Their SDE went viral - it was watched over 1500 times within the first 24 hours after we posted it - it's kind of crazy when we sit back and think that people from countries all around the world are able to experience the wedding of a family member or friend within hours of it happening - all thanks to their Same Day Edit and the power of the Internet.   If you missed it here's the  SDE link.
Jenn and Mike toured Europe on their honeymoon and had a fabulous time (I wish I had tagged along to photograph them and all the amazing scenery over there) and have just returned home in time to see the unveiling of some of their wedding photos here on the blog.  I adore these two and I wish them a lifetime of love and happiness - muah!!!

angela + anthony // with pickles, taters, and olives

September 1, 2010 | Filed Under StillMotion | Leave a Comment

angela is what you’d call detail oriented. their wedding was the definition of DIY. and it was the definition of green. but what we loved the most was how much thought was put into every detail.

my favourite: the fact that the bridesmaids walked down the aisle with balloons instead of flowers. but it’s not only that. each balloon signified a loved one who was unable to attend the wedding but was there in spirit.

but i think pickles, taters, and olives were the biggest part. no, not the foods. the dogs. a+a have three, quite eccentric jack russell terriers who HAD to be at the wedding. you see, these dogs (aka the kids) are the ones who wear the pants. not anthony, not angela… the dogs rule the family. so it was only natural for olives to be the flower girl, and pickles and taters to walk ange down the aisle.

only problem: if they’re not tired out, they’re gonna cause a ruckus at the ceremony.

solution: well… you’ll just have to see.

here’s their sde together with my favourite photos of the day. big shouts go out to amanda for an awesome job shooting with me! And a huge thank you to Amy Seeley for providing us with a brand new song!

-amina

kudos to amanda for this series. she returned every 3 minutes or so to grab the same angle of the polaroid developing. i then went ahead and designed the layout. good teamwork!

olives, the smallest of the pack (and the girl i might add) leads the games.

one of many small things…

cuff links to commemorate loved ones on one wrist, and daily worn pearls on the other. i love that she wore jewelry that’s an everyday piece. now when she wears them again, they’ll have so many memories.

instead of guests sitting on “angela’s side” or “anthony’s side” at the ceremony, they simply wore pins.

the boys tug at ange as she walks through hand made pinwheels lining the aisle.

one of my faves from the whole day.

the old mac vs pc game. vows written on electronic devices… and speeches too. fitting, since anthony works for a cell carrier just north of toronto.

[click to enlarge] i couldn’t decide if angela was a tad cruel to make the guys wear green heart glasses at first. until i saw them wearing them every chance they got!

by this time hunger was kicking in. and this was sounding really amazing.

guests assemble polaroid cards with marital advice and personal notes.

the parents’ dances went from sentimental to hip hop in no time.

Tracie + John // The Life in the Years

September 1, 2010 | Filed Under Weddings By SML | Leave a Comment

Living like Lincoln. The first thing that comes to mind when we think of Tracie + John. There was a toast that was made by Tracie's father at the reception and he quotes a couple very choice words from our 16th president. Tracie + John live out those words every day of their lives. We would be lying if we didn't point out that we were very much looking forward to cutting this trailer. After an evening with these two, their family and friends, and more energy than could have been imagined, this wedding was busting at the seems with story and just waiting on the edit line for this post.

He likes the Red Sox. She likes Animals. He has no fear rocking manties (you'll see). She eats cereal with a fork. He needs but a simple excuse to celebrate. She used to be a competitive figure skater. This list goes on and on and the sentences only become better and better. Instead of writing and writing, we'll let you simply watch. . . . . . and watch.

A very special thank you to Lisa Moon of Lisa Moon Events for making the day so much easier. Also, thank you to Tasos Tsirtsis from LSM Entertainment for all of his help at the reception. If you need a event planner extraordinaire or a great DJ, look no further than these two!

What better way to incorporate friends, family, and your awesome wedding party than Elysium's Rock 'N Roll Same Day Edit! Jacquelyn and Anthony definitely agreed with this idea as they celebrated their special day and treated their guests to a super cool video. Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village was the venue chosen for Jacquelyn and Anthony's beautiful evening ceremony and late night reception (they had an after hours party 'til 3 am!). Camilla of Element Weddings did an extraordinary job planning and coordinating the day and we shot alongside Sean Twomey of 2me Studios. Check out this Rockin' Same Day Edit!!

Kristy + Andy’s Notre Dame Wedding Trailer

Post image for Kristy + Andy’s Notre Dame Wedding Trailer

Kristy and Andy had a gorgeous wedding in South Bend, IN. Both attended Notre Dame, so it came as no surprise that they were married in the b-e-a-utiful basilica on campus. Kristy and Andy also put together a very unique and cool reception, complete with a one of a kind entrance! We had the opportunity to work with some very cool vendors as well, including Mel Ball and the Colours, and the Morris Performing Arts Center.

We had an awesome time with these two, and it was awesome for me to be able to visit Notre Dame’s campus. That place is full of so much history and the people are so passionate about the University. It’s seriously SO cool to see. Congrats to both of you!!

Rachel + Drew Pre Wedding Film

September 1, 2010 | Filed Under David Perry Films | Leave a Comment

Well the big day has finally come and gone for Drew and Rachel and we are excited to share their pre wedding shoot.
We shot this at Sundance and the Salt Lake Temple a month before the wedding. This enabled us to get some great shots that would otherwise not be captured on the wedding day and makes the wedding day so much more enjoyable by taking up less time for photos and video and providing more time to relax with friends and family. I do understand that some couples don't want to see each other in their wedding attire prior to the wedding. I can appreciate that, but one advantage to seeing each other prior to the wedding day is that we can capture it on film - something that we could never do on the actual wedding day when you are getting married in an LDS temple.

Brent + Natalie // Wedding Highlights | Richmond, VA

August 31, 2010 | Filed Under Josh Gooden - Photography + Cinematography | Leave a Comment

Brent and Natalie..hmm..where to start? Well about seven months ago I met Brent, an amazing voice over artist and writer, who loves all things Disney (except the Disney Channel) and a girl named Natalie. After talking with him about how they met and their story, I was so excited that they chose me to document their special day.

A few months later, I was hired to work on a three year film project for the VA Health Department. To my surprise, Brent was also working on the same project (his office is right beside mine haha) and I was really able to get to know him and Natalie more as the months progressed towards their big day.

Their beautiful wedding was held at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Richmond, VA and the reception was held at The Westin Richmond.

I hope you enjoy the highlights!
