Carly & Jon | A Sneak Peek

March 14, 2010 | Filed Under Mintyslippers | Leave a Comment

This weekend we had a chance to take our new camera out for a proper spin at the wedding of Carly & Jon. They had their wedding in the beautiful Sculpture Gallery at Woburn Abbey and thankfully we had plenty of sunshine.

The new camera is amazing in so many ways but we thought we would share with you some images which were taken from the video footage we captured. You will agree that Carly not only looked stunning but clearly knew how to work the camera.

WPPI : Wedding & Portrait Photographers International

March 13, 2010 | Filed Under Star Fruit Productions | Leave a Comment

WPPI was quite a whirlwind of learning, networking and good ole fun! Being my first conference, I had no clue what to expect. The only thing I did know was that over 10,000 photogs and a select group of wedding filmmakers would be converging at the MGM Grand in Vegas. This had to be good right?

It was my first trip back to Vegas since my sister graduated from UNLV several years ago, I used to go quite frequently when I lived in LA. I never was huge a gambler but, I do like shiny things, so Vegas is right up my alley!

I arrived Sunday night and went straight to my room, I wanted to get some sleep so I could soak up as much knowledge as possible at the workshop the next morning. Aces in Vegas was great. Joe Simon and Bruce Patterson are very generous with their knowledge and it was great to get some hands-on time with all the fun tools.

After the workshop, I helped Kara McGinn Jensen shoot her quilting documentary. Andrew Hsu, James Burkart, and Isabel Gonzalez were all in the house! The quilter/surfer guy, www.robappell.com, was really amazing. The way he spoke about bringing different elements into the quilt and telling a story made me realize how close it is to what I do. There are so many ways to tell a story!

I also got to spend some time with David Robin, John Goolsby, Kristen *, Julie and Alex Hill, Travis Cossel and Kevin Shahinian. These guys are incredible event filmmakers and it was really cool getting to hang out with them in person.

But I must admit one of the highlights of my trip was seeing Jason Magbanua. He has been an inspiration to me me since I started my biz 3 years ago. His talent accompanied by his incredible personality is just good stuff! And.... he said he's proud of my work! That is moment I will hold onto for a long time! Thanks Sir Jason!!!

Vegas was incredible, and it really does feel like mirage in the desert. I can't believe how lucky I was to have gotten to spend so much time with the the people in my industry that I respect so much.

I'm taking many lessons from Wppi. Some expected and some not, but I am grateful for all.

I’m back in our Toronto office after a quick trip to Las Vegas where we put on our first small group hands-on workshop with DSLR cinema cameras.  It was really nice to see all the new faces and some familiar ones as well. Our attendees really seemed to enjoy the instruction and all the gear that we had on hand.  Here’s what some of them said on Twitter right after the workshop:

@dannysalazar: @joesimon @bruce_patterson thank you guys for sharing your knowledge & experience! it has really encouraged me to push forward in this art.

@lolavideo: Had a great time at the Aces in Vegas workshop with @joesimon & @bruce_patterson. Learned good things & met some great ppl :)

@Matt_idofilms: I feel sad that I couldn’t be at the workshop with @joesimon and @bruce_patterson in Vegas. If there’s another, I’ll be there!

On behalf of my colleague Joe Simon I’d really like to thank everyone for coming to our workshop - here’s the group pic we shot before you all left!

Alison + Duane’s Wedding: Vendor Spotlight Dutch Bloemen Winkel and Diana Ma Events at the Omni Mount Washington Resort

March 12, 2010 | Filed Under Meg Simone | Leave a Comment

Brides always say, “You are so lucky to get to go to all these weddings and see so many details!” and I guess I have to agree… it’s pretty awesome! Carrie Scribner of Dutch Bloemen Winkel did all the floral and design elements, and Diana Ma Events provided linens which combined made the tables look so perfect for the time of year. The Presidential Ballroom at the Omni Mount Washington Resort is a new space, so it was only my third time filming in the room, but I love the details on the walls, and Diana tied that in with the pattern of the table linens. Diana is a sweetheart to work with, easy to talk to, and full of ideas. I look forward to doing another event with her soon. Carrie, I can’t say enough about – she comes up with so many fitting pieces for where we are (in the White Mountains) and I love her use of natural elements, candle light, and flowers throughout the room (and on the cake).  Thanks to Elizabeth Bradford Photography for providing me with photos to share on my site.

Bessie and Sina’s Highlights from The Detroit Opera House

March 12, 2010 | Filed Under Epic Motion | Leave a Comment

The Detroit Opera House is an AMAZING venue for a wedding. Bessie and Sina’s wedding was no-joke GOR.GE.OUS (I think I just made that word into three words. It’s fine, right?).. from the people to the place, seriously gorgeous.

One of my favorite moments of the day is when they saw each other for the first time. This usually is one of my highlights… it’s a moment of raw emotion. Very, very precious.

We’re also big fans of Arising Images. They took some AMAZING shots throughout the day. Here’s a link to see some pictures

Enjoy their extended highlights piece.

One Video, Two Songs. Which do you prefer?

March 12, 2010 | Filed Under Epic Motion | Leave a Comment

A while back, Chris emailed us and said that he wanted us to help him play a joke on his new bride.  It was before we had finished editing their wedding trailer, and Chris suggested creating an “alternative” version of the trailer once it was finished – by swapping out the song we intended to use – to a song he knew Melissa HATED.  Let’s just say that Chris and Melissa are two of the most playful people we know.

Sooooo… of course we thought this would be hilarious – as long as Chris made sure to let Melissa know in the end that this was ALL his idea.  For the “real” version of the trailer, the song we chose to edit to was Mutemath’s ‘Goodbye’ (sidenote: I drove the lead singer of Mutemath and his band at the time – Earthsuit – around metro Detroit for the day during my time at college!)

And for the “fake” video we used the song per Chris’s suggestion, ‘Don’t be Tardy for the Party’ by Kim Zolciak.

The crazy thing is, some of the cuts actually line up with the Tardy for the Party song – totally crazy since we just dropped the song in and didn’t try lining anything up.

Melissa was so sweet in her email to me telling me that she liked it. But when she found out that it was a joke, I’m not sure if she wanted to hurt Chris or myself more! Good times.

Perhaps you understand better how music can really dictate the look and feel of a video.

And just for fun, which one do you prefer?

meet justin + mary // a photographer promo

March 12, 2010 | Filed Under StillMotion | Leave a Comment

because for us it always started with love

what’s this, a photographer promo without a camera or shooting ?!? preposterous.

as with our wedding films, the idea behind this promo was to capture the unique essence of justin and mary. when we got right down to it, that didn’t involve them actually shooting. rather, it was more about what inspires their shooting. the writing of the VO also ties in so well into who mary is (just read their blog and you will understand, i keep telling her she should be writing books not blog posts).

i love the contrast of the scenes shot in HD and the super 8. to me, this contrast really conveys the contrast in their personalities. at times they are very outgoing, quirky, and quite silly. yet at others they are very quiet and romantic. by filming the same scene in the two different formats, we attempted to convey those two sides to the same couple.

thanks to justin and mary for being so open and trusting throughout the process. they are both such amazing people and they sure made it tough to leave new haven, CT.

check out their site here: justinmarantz.com/

music by amy seeley ’surprisingly so’ licensed at with etiquette.

thanks for watching.

One Thursday afternoon…

March 11, 2010 | Filed Under Paper Cranes Productions | Leave a Comment

A couple weeks ago, me and Santo had the opportunity to get our pictures (or I should have said our post wedding pictures ^^) taken by Dayna Patterson. She’s originally from London, then off to Perth, and now based in Sydney (what a journey!)

The story began when Santo saw this offer from FCP Talent Registry (Santo is quite a forum geek…). The first one to email Dayna about the offer will be entitled with a free session with her. Guess what…yes we are the first one :)

Never thought that we’ll be doing another photo session again after all those many many many wedding and pre-wedding pictures that we did couple of months back.

Dayna and Doug (her fiance) are such a sweet couple. Doug is a very funny guy, more like a comedian I think :) We really enjoy the session, very relaxing, the weather oh so nice, beautiful locations (Mrs Macquarie Chair and Botanical Gardens), love it!

Thank you Dayna and Doug for the opportunity. All the best for your journey in Sydney!

Here’s the link for our session:

Enjoy and Happy Friday everyone :)

Pelican Hill / Arthouse Platinum Feature / Suzanne & Max

March 11, 2010 | Filed Under Elysium Productions | Leave a Comment

Well this is embarrassing. I start a March Madness Marathon and then don't post for a week!! I guess I bit off more than I could chew :( I've been in Vegas for WPPI and have barely been back to my room due to all the activities. Silly me thought I'd easily be able to get in some editing and blog posting while I was here :( Due to that, I'm extending the marathon into April!

So without further delay, here is a gorgeous wedding from Pelican Hill. I absolutely adore this couple and you may remember their Same Day Edit from an earlier post! Max was kind enough to do a guest blog post for me:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Suzanne and I met in 2006 at a Stanford vs. UCLA football game (my school against hers) which we were both invited to by a mutual friend. It was love at first sight, and though we were surrounded by many of our friends, we had an amazing first encounter.

I knew Suzanne was the one for me when we would spend countless hours together on the weekends, and I still wanted to keep being with her because we had so much we wanted to talk about and do together. She truly inspired me to grow and become a better person, and she lit up my days with her warmth and bright energy.

I planned a crazy, ultra-romantic proposal for her in Paris, complete with a horse-drawn carriage ride to a private capri boat on the Seine and getting down on one knee under the Lover's Bridge with people throwing rose petals at us from above. I think she liked that.

Thus, the theme of our wedding became modern Paris. Suzanne's and my favorite color was lavender/purple, so we chose that as our main wedding color. Because she was starting medical school, I took over most of the job of planning the wedding. I sort of went crazy designing my own custom Save-the-Date US Passport "To Love" (and Air France ticket) in addition to a custom box invitation in lavender silk with an Eiffel Tower holding the invitation scroll inside. I also really enjoyed making sure all of the many details supported the theme and inspired the feeling of Parisian romance for our guests. I couldn't have pulled everything off though without the help of Kathleen Cover, our awesome wedding coordinator.

The things we enjoyed most about our wedding day were finally being able to see everything come together, having our friends and family close to us, dancing the night away with our band, finally relaxing at our honeymoon, and of course the absolutely astounding same-day edit Elysium created (which has literally made people cry).

We want to sincerely thank our families for making this beautiful dream come true for us and all of our great vendors for providing their help. We will never forget that day, and we now have this beautiful video to commemorate it forever.

- Max

Evelyn and Bryan, the In-Between

March 11, 2010 | Filed Under Mason Jar Films | Leave a Comment

Every life is a story, and story is told thru relationships.  With weddings, all these personalties are gathered in one place for the only time in history, and going throughout a wedding day is like reading the couple's story person by person, chapter by chapter.

If Mr. Hoelscher (two posts below) represents how things began, and Miss Katie (post directly below) signifies what is to come, then Monsignor McGowan, who baptized Evelyn as well as both of her sisters, represents the sacrament of everything in between.  It was only fitting that he conduct the sacrament of marriage, and his Irish brogue only adds to his authority of overseeing that which is holy.

Things You Can Do To Take Your Signature Film To The Next Level!

March 10, 2010 | Filed Under Aubert Films | Leave a Comment

cardexchange

Over the years I’ve had the honor of sh0oting a lot of weddings.  Jewish, Hindu, Catholic, Persian, etc., etc. I’ve also shot wedding all over the country. From Hartford, Connecticut to Napa Valley, California. You name it and I’ve probably shot it.

In all these weddings, there are a few things I have found that can turn a good wedding film into a great one.  These are things that are cheap (some free) and will not only make your film awesome but make your wedding day that much more special.

Here are three things that can make an awesome wedding film:

1.) Card/Gift Exchanges
cardwriting
Almost every couple exchanges some kind of gift the day of the wedding. So often though, I arrive for the preparations and the gifts have already been exchanged and opened. I know the excitement the morning of, but if you wait to open those gifts when both myself and your photographer are present, that emotional and memorable moment can be captured. What better way to open your Signature Wedding Film than with you opening your gift?
Card exchanges are something that are less common than gifts. Why? I have no idea! A gift is great but nothing beats a hand written letter expressing your love and affection for your significant other the morning of the wedding! You don’t need to be Shakespeare and write a sonnet; a quick paragraph will do fine. Trust me! The best wedding films I’ve ever done have card exchanges. It is a universal rule for having an awesome film!

2.) Choose your officiant wisely!
officiantIf you’re getting married at your local house of worship by your favorite pastor/priest/etc. so be it. But for those of you who don’t have someone particular in mind or are getting married out of town, take some time to research who marries you! Often I use your officiant’s message during the ceremony as the narrative that binds together your entire film. If you have an officiant who is boring, is not a good public speaker, or has nothing especially compelling to say, it will really hurt your wedding film. Ask for some sample ceremonies or maybe even a past wedding video for you to view. You can even request a copy of your ceremony before your wedding to make sure it’s up to par. Having an awesome message from your officiant will make a huge difference in the emotional impact of your film!

3.) Write your own vows!
customvows

If your religion and officiant allow it, write your own vows!!!! Don’t be lazy! I always get the excuse that “We don’t want to have to worry about it.” Tough crap! Haha. Writing your own vows will take less than an hour. You don’t need to memorize them, reading them off a small piece of paper is fine. But write from the heart! Your vows should be personal messages to one another. Writing your own will not only make your film better, but it will be the most emotional and touching moment of your entire wedding.

I hope these tips will help you make your Signature Wedding Film into an awesome Philadelphia Wedding Video.

Alison + Duane’s Wedding: Vendor Spotlight on JP William Mellekas

March 10, 2010 | Filed Under Meg Simone | Leave a Comment

Alison + Duane (1/9/10 at the Omni Mount Washington Resort) were such a nice couple. Kind and gentle towards each other, and their ceremony exudes that thanks to JP William Mellekas (by referral only, he’s located in Franconia, NH – contact me for info). He did such a great job and I enjoyed his genuine care and compassion, and ability to orchestrate such a personal and touching celebration. You can hear more of his sound bites throughout their highlight film.

Does your JP know you? Have you met them prior to the ceremony? Are they a friend of the family? Have you given much thought to the elements that best represent your beliefs in marriage, that you can add into the ceremony? Alison and Duane chose the blending of the sands ceremony, some people write their own vows, some have lots of poems, readings, or songs. Whatever it is you choose to do, make sure you feel comfortable with the person you choose to officiate your ceremony. You will be at ease walking down the isle knowing that everything is in good hands.

To see more images from Duane + Alison’s wedding, have a peak at Elizabeth Bradford Photography. A husband/wife team based in NH. All images in this post provided by Christine + Peter of Elizabeth Bradford.

Katherine + Richard

March 10, 2010 | Filed Under Couch Media Wedding Cinema | Leave a Comment

Katherine + Richard were married on 30 January 2010 at Sacre Kouer, Glen Iris (Katherine's old high school)

With a family history associated with horse racing, it was only natural that the reception celebrations were held at Caulfield Race Course. It was a "Blue Moon" as well (second full moon in a calendar month) so it certainly was a huge night!

Their daughter, Harriette was a flowergirl - I think it so cool when a child can say they were at their parents wedding!

Thanks to "Something to talk about" for playing great music both at the church and reception.
Thanks also to Jason Vannan and Graham from Jason Vannan Photography for sharing the creative vision!

I'm looking forward to screening the premier full length feature with Katherine + Richard next Monday!

Katherine + Richard from Marcus Seeger @ Couch Media on Vimeo.

A good tip is to press play then pause, wait until the movie has loaded and then press play. HD can be turned off if you prefer. Also press the cross image for full screen.Enjoy.

Couple of weeks ago we posted that we attended the workshop. It was 3 days of intense learning. We walked away with some great things that really made us want to push the envelope even more. The Stillmotion crew put together a highlight of our day 2 which involved coming up with ideas, planning, shooting and editing. They captured both the challenges and the triumphs of of all the attendees.. No doubt I am in it a few times..Just look out for the guy with the flower and Emily’s paper folding skills are shown off :)
